Sustainable Products for a Sustainable Planet

About us

The Sustainability Consortium (TSC) is a global non-profit organization transforming the consumer goods industry to deliver more sustainable consumer products. We work to enable a world where people can lead fulfilled lives in a way that decouples their impacts on people and the planet. Our members and partners include manufacturers, retailers, suppliers, service providers, NGOs, civil society organizations, governmental agencies and academics. TSC convenes our diverse stakeholders to work collaboratively to build science-based decision tools and solutions that address sustainability issues that are materially important throughout a product’s supply chain and lifecycle. TSC also offers a portfolio of services to help drive effective improvement and implementation. Formed in 2009, TSC is headquartered at Arizona State University and has a European office at Wageningen University and Research in the Netherlands. • How can regenerative agriculture reshape the future of agriculture? TSC member Woolworths New Zealand, LeaderBrand, and The New Zealand Institute for Plant and Food Research Limited are leading regenerative farming projects in Gisborne, New Zealand, which are revealing effective strategies for revitalizing heavily farmed land through better soil. Healthy soil is not only a foundation for better crops, but also important to a sustainable future. Supported by the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), these trials are using compost and cover crops to transform soil health, improve yields, and reduce reliance on synthetic fertilizers. After just one year, the soil is already showing signs of transformation: 🌱 Healthier Soil Ecosystems: More microbes and organisms are thriving, boosting nutrient cycles and making crops more resilient. 🌽 Better Yields: Crops like spinach and mesclun have better yield, and there’s even improved nitrogen supply, reducing the need for synthetic fertilizers. 💧 Improved Soil Structure: The soil is softer, stores more moisture, and helps roots access the nutrients they need. For Woolworths, this isn’t just about better crop yields— it’s about creating farming systems that can sustain our food supply and the planet for generations. What role do you think regenerative agriculture should play in creating a sustainable food system? • What does it take to build a sustainable coffee supply chain? Cornell University, one of our TSC members, and World Coffee Research (WCR) are leading the Coffee Improvement Program to empower smallholder coffee farmers facing climate challenges and safeguard the global coffee supply chain. The coffee industry contributes $343 billion to the US economy alone and employs 2.2 million Americans. This is why ensuring the resilience of coffee smallholders is crucial for both local economies and global supply chains. With over $5M from USAID, this program aims to tackle key issues facing coffee farmers today: 🌱 Advanced Breeding Tools: Fast-tracking disease resistance for long-term productivity. 🌍 Global Breeding Programs: Equipping coffee breeding programs in nine countries with cutting-edge tools and training to respond to climate needs. 🌱 Seed Systems for Farmers: Ensuring smallholders have access to high-quality seeds and planting material for resilience. What impact do you believe climate resilience will have on coffee’s future? Let us know in the comments 👇 Read more here: https://buff.ly/3CHYpL8 #CoffeeIndustry #Sustainability #AgricultureInnovation #ClimateResilience #Cornell #WorldCoffeeResearch

  • “TSC’s THESIS data show that companies struggle to document and map their supply chain origins. Only 8% of nearly 800 suppliers have transparency to the farm. The majority of food and beverage companies using THESIS do not even know the country of origin for their product supply chains. Ending deforestation, slave labor, and decarbonizing agriculture and forest supply chains hinges on companies knowing where their supply chains originate.” —Christy Slay, CEO, The Sustainability Consortium To tackle this program - The Sustainability Consortium developed CommodityMap, a free tool that uses geospatial analytics to predict environmental and social priorities in agricultural supply chains. CommodityMap will: 🍃 Help you prioritize your efforts to address environmental and social priorities 🧪 Recommend science-based actions that offer solutions and context to your biggest issues 📚 Help you educate and engage your audience with easy to interpret metrics And did we mention it’s free? • ♻️ Unilever's meaningful shift: Vaseline’s new pump design makes recycling easy! Plastic waste is rising, and both consumers and businesses are looking for solutions to prioritize the planet’s wellbeing. Unilever—a TSC member—is committed to a sustainable approach. Their goal to make 100% of rigid plastic packaging reusable, recyclable, or compostable by 2030 is one step in a larger journey toward reducing environmental impact.
