The Wistar family has a long-standing Philadelphia history reaching far beyond its many firsts in #biomedicalresearch. This massive fruiting Ginkgo tree at Grumblethorpe, a former Wistar family home in the city’s Historic Germantown section, dates back to 1754 and is one of the oldest Gingko trees still standing in America today. Plan a walk around the Grumblethorpe gardens at 5267 Germantown Avenue to savor the majestic sight of a tree older than the United States, and visit wistar.org to learn more about the many local and international firsts that can be traced back to the Wistar family.

Back in the early 1900s, five eight major scientific journals — more than 81,000 pages of material — were published by The Wistar Press. Abstracts were even provided in Japanese, Chinese, and Spanish to help professors in teaching to undergraduate students. Today you can stay up to date with The Wistar Institute’s twice-yearly e-magazine, Focus, and a monthly e-newsletter highlighting upcoming events and the latest Wistar biomedical advances. Can HIV be cured? Wistar’s Dr. Luis Montaner says yes — and shared researchers’ latest promising strategies at the recent Los Angeles Commission on HIV annual conference. From novel bispecifics that enhance existing therapies, to new antiretroviral drugs that trigger infected cells to self-destruct, Montaner said the goal was not just to manage HIV but to eradicate it. New advances and funding for HIV research mean a cure is within reach, he said. “… as this train is not stopping — we are going to get there.” Learn more about this groundbreaking research here: https://bit.ly/4iSmIGX #HIVhope #HIVresearch

Students and postdocs in biomedicine gain knowledge on the art and science of life-changing and lifesaving medicine based on the foundational work of Dr. Caspar Wistar, an anatomist whose important contributions include the first American anatomy textbook published in the early 1920s. Today, The Wistar Institute is his namesake and is one of the most trusted international leaders in biomedical research. Visit wistar.org to learn more about how The Wistar Institute contributes to early-stage discovery, treatment, and cures. Wistar science – today’s discoveries, tomorrow’s cures. #WistarScience

Engineered T cells called CAR T cells have been used to treat challenging diseases like aggressive cancers and autoimmune conditions. And now, The Wistar Institute’s Dr. Daniel Claiborne, is applying the science of CAR T cells to one of the most challenging questions in biomedical research: the search for an effective HIV cure. We sat down with Dr. Claiborne to learn more about how his research will support the emboldened HIV research mission at Wistar through the new HIV Cure and Viral Diseases Center.
