Today is National Cat Day! 🐱 And even though Halloween is this week too, did you know that cats cannot taste sweet things? Cats have different taste receptors from humans, dogs, and other mammals, and are the only species that lacks the ability to detect sugar! This is likely due to their evolutionary diet as obligate carnivores, which dogs are not. This is why you see many dog treats with sweet additions like peanut butter or maple syrup, but not cat treats. It's because cats cannot taste these things! 🍭 #nationalcatday #didyouknow

So you might be wondering: How exactly does The Bobo Fund work? Step 1: Pet owners will visit thebobofund.org to review requirements and determine if they are eligible to apply for assistance. We provide assistance to pet owner who are facing financial hardship and have pets that require prescription medication or food for a chronic medical condition. Step 2: Pet owners will fill out an application, providing information about their financial hardship and their pet’s chronic medical needs. Step 3: Application will be reviewed and eligibility/the amount of aid that will be awarded will be determined. We will keep applicants updated via email. Step 4: The Bobo Fund will call in payment for chronic medications or food directly to the prescribing veterinarian or have medication shipped directly from Chewy! For more information, visit thebobofund.org to find out more information about qualifications and how you can support our mission 🧡

So many of the chronic illnesses that our pets develop occur naturally with old age. We can do absolutely everything to ensure our pet is healthy, but something may still turn up. I adopted two cats when I was in high school--littermates--who both eventually developed high-blood pressure in their teens. These were both healthy cats, not overweight by any means, and had never had any kind of medical problem, so I thought that it HAD to be genetic for them both to develop the disease. Sally was not diagnosed with high blood pressure until she was around 18 years old. She was an otherwise very healthy senior cat. Since I had never had to give her a pill in literally her entire life, I was grateful to find out that transdermal medication existed. I think that was my first experience with it. It's just a cream that you put on the inside of your cat's ear everyday. No one wants to stress out their 18 year old cat by forcing a pill down their throat. Sally lived to be a few months shy of 21! The oldest, and longest pet I have ever had. I have had many many experiences with pets and long-term medication, and it's not just Bobo who inspired The Bobo Fund, it's Sally and many others. I am looking forward to helping and connecting with other pet owners who need our support. -- Sarah Fuqua, Founder of The Bobo Fund We are SO excited to find out that we have the option to order directly through Chewy, which has options for transdermal medications for cats, to help pet parents in need. These medications can help so much if you have a senior cat that you do not want to stress. If you have a story about your pet with a chronic illness, please message or email us thebobofund@gmail.com 🧡

October is Pet Obesity Awareness Month. Did you know that according to the Purina Institute, up to 63% of cats and 59.3% of dogs are considered overweight or obese?! Obesity is linked to many diseases, including osteoarthritis and feline diabetes. The easiest way to keep your pet at a healthy weight is to properly portion their food. The recommended feeding amount on the bag isn't always a one size fits all. You can use a calorie calculator like on petnutritionalliance.org to determine the amount of food your pet should be getting each day to maintain a healthy body weight. Follow and check out thebobofund.org for more information about how we can with chronic medications for your pet or someone you know.
