This phenomenon often arises from a lack of diverse representation in leadership or formal DEI structures. 🔺Why It Matters: Role Compression can lead to burnout, reduced job satisfaction, and unequal workplace dynamics. While the contributions of underrepresented employees are invaluable, it’s essential for organizations to distribute DEI responsibilities more equitably and to formalize structures that don’t overburden individuals. Addressing Role Compression ensures that diversity efforts don’t inadvertently create new inequities. 🔺Example: A female employee in a predominantly male tech team is frequently asked to represent “the female perspective” on panels or diversity initiatives, in addition to her regular workload. While her contributions are valued, the constant requests stretch her bandwidth and place an unfair burden on her to represent her entire gender. 🔺Did You Know?: According to a report by Catalyst Inc., 50% of women in underrepresented groups report feeling obligated to take on extra responsibilities related to diversity and inclusion efforts, compared to only 20% of their male counterparts.
