#InTheNews: The United States Can't Arrest Its Way Out of Gun Violence: Communities, hospitals, and prosecutors can play valuable roles in curbing gun violence Across the country, communities, hospitals, and prosecutors are stepping up to address gun violence with a public health approach that focuses on prevention and healing. By putting community members, healthcare providers, and progressive prosecutors in leadership roles, these innovative programs work to build trust, promote well-being, and foster safety. As federal action remains uncertain, it’s crucial to support state, local, and community-based efforts to combat gun violence, rather than relying on ineffective and harmful policing strategies. As highlighted in this article, The Health Alliance for Violence Intervention emphasizes the impact of Hospital-Based Violence Intervention Programs (#HVIPs) which are "multidisciplinary programs that combine the efforts of medical staff with trusted community-based partners to provide safety planning, services, and trauma-informed care to violently injured people, many of whom are boys and men of color."
