Mentorship is key to inspire young people from all communities to become tomorrow’s leading scientists and engineers. “For a long time, young girls could not see women scientists that look like themselves. Young people of color could not see themselves,” President and CEO of Society for Science Maya Ajmera told Science With A Twist as she discussed the need to improve diversity in STEM fields. This November we are celebrating our longtime commitment to make STEM education more accessible and equitable as part of Thermo Fisher’s STEM Education Month. Through programs like the Thermo Fisher Scientific #JuniorInnovators Challenge, we’re helping to expand access to hands-on learning experiences designed to inspire young innovators who will help bring solutions to some of the world’s most critical scientific challenges. We are proud to support The Hand Project, an organization that helps individuals like Veronica Kidemi from Arusha, Tanzania. Veronica lost her right hand due to a domestic violence incident, but she was determined to maintain her independence. She taught herself to use her left hand for daily tasks but found hope and dignity through The Hand Project, which provided her with a prosthetic hand. Our colleagues in Langenselbold, Germany, volunteered to help assemble the prosthetic hands, but the experience taught them so much more about Veronica and others like her. "Two billion people don't have access to clean drinking water. And that's what inspired my project: to be able to find a nearly zero-cost way to be able to filter water," remarked 13-year-old Tina Jin from San Jose, CA., on CBS News. Tina won the top prize at this year's Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge, the nation's premier STEM research competition for middle school students. Her novel water filtration system uses natural materials to make dirty water potable, as verified by an independent agency. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/g6cRrwRQ

The bacteria that cause pneumonia is the leading cause of related hospitalizations in children and the second leading cause for adults. This is why Thermo Fisher empowers healthcare providers with advanced diagnostic tools designed to detect the bacteria at the root of pneumonia, which can lead to severe complications if not properly and efficiently treated. Our comprehensive antimicrobial tests help clinicians do this by providing the accurate results they need to determine the most effective treatment for their patients. Together, we can help ensure that pneumonia is diagnosed quickly and treated appropriately. #WorldPneumoniaDay https://lnkd.in/g3JNRdsf

This week, I had the privilege of meeting with Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey. We had a very productive discussion about the current business climate, the state’s biomedical ecosystem and the long-term benefits of advancing the life sciences industry in Massachusetts. We also talked about the importance of a strong STEM education system, as well as the role of our region’s academic medical centers and institutions of higher learning in fueling discovery and Innovation and developing the next generation of talent. The impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on scientific discovery – and on nearly every aspect of our lives – was also a key topic of conversation. It goes without saying that I was proud to share with the governor the role that Thermo Fisher plays in advancing many of these priorities. As one of the state’s largest companies, we are committed to helping advance the life sciences industry in Massachusetts, so we can help to improve lives across the globe.
