🌳 Forests are one of the most powerful carbon sinks on our planet, absorbing vast amounts of carbon dioxide and regulating Earth’s climate. Yet they face relentless destruction from industrial agriculture, mining, and other harmful practices. The Southern Peasants’ Federation of Thailand (SPFT), one of our movement partners, is reclaiming land from monoculture palm oil plantations and transforming barren lands into thriving, self-managed ecosystems. These new landscapes are a great example of what’s possible when Indigenous and local communities steward the land they rightfully own and claim. Indigenous communities have long practiced agroecology—a form of agriculture that integrates local wisdom and ecological principles. Agroecology is a proven solution for climate resiliency and food sovereignty, and the antithesis to extractive, corporatized, and industrialized agriculture. Last year, we supported 70 movement partners who are working to end industrial agriculture and advance agroecology. One of them is Aliansi Masyarakat Adat Nusantara (AMAN). AMAN runs a school to teach agroecological practices across Indigenous territories. So far, the school has educated over 20,000 young people, women, people with disabilities, and others about Indigenous practices of agroecological farming. With your help, the lessons and benefits of agroecology can extend even further. Will you make a gift to support agroecology today?

Movements across the world are demonstrating how #agroecology is more than just a way of growing food—it is an approach rooted in eco-consciousness as it helps cool the planet and attain #FoodSovereignty. Kenyan Peasants League (KPL) has been fighting for a legal ban on Genetically Modified (GMO) crops, supporting Indigenous seed systems, building cooperatives, and ensuring that communities have access to healthy, culturally appropriate food. GMOs threaten food systems’ diversity, which is essential for ecosystems to adapt to changing climates, diseases, and pests. Through their work, KPL is not only defending people's cultures and livelihoods but also strengthening food systems and protecting our planet. ➡️ Read more about the impact KPL and other movement partners are making in our latest Annual Report: https://lnkd.in/e4PjAYaR

Social movements do the essential work of calling out abuses of power, organizing against injustice , strengthening communities, and imagining better futures. Now more than ever, philanthropy can be an ally for movements by making sure they have the support they need to thrive, even in challenging political climates. In election years the significance of electoral politics naturally takes center stage, but we must remember that the work of social movements continues, and so must our commitment to them. Read on for how philanthropy must step up in this critical moment, in our latest op-ed by President & CEO Solome Lemma for Alliance magazine: https://lnkd.in/eUPzBUW2

Transformative change comes from social movements. Thousand Currents aims to learn from grassroots movement leaders, resource them, amplify their work, and collectively forge a path toward a just future. We know that the work of social movements takes time; that’s why our grantmaking approach centers long-term, trust-based, and movement-led relationships of at least 10 years. We build relationships to accompany the ups and downs of social transformation. In 2024 we are proud to have supported 148 partners in 65 countries through 206 grants.
