What role can philanthropy play in tackling the climate crisis? ClimateWorks Foundation “Funding Trends 2024” points to the answer: Moving more money to climate action 💰 While climate giving increased in 2023, it still represents less than 2% of philanthropic giving worldwide.. It's time for philanthropy to step up and move more money to grassroots movements on the front-lines of climate justice work. “One of the things that I saw from the work my grandmother did is that she was always caring beyond just herself. What she understood was that her actions not only impacted her family, but also impacted her community, and the wider society she was part of. ” Zanele Sibanda, our Vice President of Global Programs, sat down with Alliance for Feminist Movements to share why funding feminist movements is essential and how her work has been inspired by the women in her family ✨ Many of Thousand Currents' movement partners are women-led, and we know that climate justice, food sovereignty, and economic justice are all deeply intertwined with gender justice ✊ Watch Zanele's full interview to hear her reflections on funding grassroots movements and supporting long-lasting, systemic change ⬇️
Funding feminist movements goes beyond solely addressing gender issues, it speaks to solving the most critical challenges society is facing today... Watch Zanele Sibanda, VP Global Programs, Thousand Currents, share her story about why they #FundFeminists.

Building community is essential - especially in challenging times. Every day, we’re inspired by our grassroots movement partners around the world who are building a world full of joy, compassion, and justice. Nous Sommes la Solution, our movement partner in Senegal, is growing a network of women farmers who use sustainable agroecology practices, among other strategies — and they’re centering community and joy in all they do ☺️ 🌱 Want to be part of this change? 💪 Collective power, collective change 💪 Today we’re celebrating a win led by grassroots activists in the UK, who led a campaign to stop the development of a massive new oil field. Last week, a court in Edinburgh declared the project ‘unlawful,’ because it had not taken into account the full climate impact of its oil production. This sets a promising precedent, with the potential for more legislation that will hold polluting industries accountable. For nearly 40 years, Thousand Currents has partnered with powerful grassroots movements in the Global South who are achieving wins for climate justice, including the Amadiba Crisis Committee, who in 2022 stopped destructive seismic testing for oil and gas in South Africa; the Center for Justice Governance and Environmental Action (CJGEA) who after years of legal battles received reparations for injuries caused by a battery recycling factory; and AFIEGO, who has been a leading voice in the #StopEACOP campaign by making sure the voices of those affected by the oil pipeline are heard. Climate change knows no borders. The wins in one country are a win for the entire planet. Together, we can build a future where #ClimateJustice is a reality. https://lnkd.in/eewE3tJV

Today we mark the two-year anniversary of the devastating earthquake that hit southern Türkiye and northern Syria in 2023, killing over 50,000 people and collapsing more than 100,000 buildings. In times of crisis, local communities are always the first to act, providing immediate aid, essential needs, and emotional and social support. From last month’s horrific fires in Los Angeles, to hurricane response in North Carolina, to flood response last year in Kenya, Brazil, and beyond, we have seen how local communities and grassroots organizations step up–not just as first responders but also for long-term recovery, and we will keep seeing it as climate disasters intensify. In Türkiye, our movement partner World March of Women Association of Asia (WMW) and allied organizations stepped up immediately following the earthquake, and have been leading rebuilding and recovery in the two years since. From collective gardens to laundry cooperatives and mental health centers, WMW has shown the world that true recovery isn’t about returning to the past—it’s about building something better, and building it together. Across the world, native forests are being destroyed without realizing their powerful potential of absorbing vast amounts of carbon dioxide and regulating Earth’s climate. In Thailand, after witnessing the loss of large swaths of forests, the Southern Peasants’ Federation of Thailand (SPFT), stood up against monoculture palm oil plantations. They reclaimed barren land and transformed it into thriving, self-managed ecosystems which now support the livelihoods of entire communities. This story is a reminder of what collective action can achieve, especially when confronting powerful systems. By working together, we can forge a path towards a just future 🌏.
