As Black History Month comes to a close, we reflect on the voices that inspire change like Billy Porter. His journey from Broadway to television, and from struggle to success, is a powerful reminder that resilience, authenticity, and purpose can break down barriers. Porter made history as the first openly gay Black man to win an Emmy for Lead Actor in a Drama, but his impact goes beyond awards. He has used his platform to uplift marginalized voices, advocate for inclusivity, and remind us all that success means little if we’re not bringing others with us. This Black History Month, TiER1 Performance is putting on our reading glasses and immersing ourselves in the Black literature that unveils truths, re-imagines universes, and speaks to experience. When we say, “Black is Lit,” we mean Black literature offers an opportunity for each of us, no matter our identity, to engage with the real, complex lives beyond the broad strokes of history books. Whether through non-fiction, poetry, or speculative science fiction, the Black voice permeates every literary genre and is always worth being heard and listened to.
