About us
TimberHP is a privately held, Maine-based building products corporation founded in 2017 to develop and manufacture renewable, biodegradable, non toxic wood fiber insulation for the residential and light commercial construction market. Global climate change is an urgent threat. It must be addressed. And simply put, we are running out of time to do so. Right now, an astounding 44% percent of global carbon emissions come from energy consumed by residential and commercial buildings. It’s an unsustainable dynamic that won’t change unless we come up with new ways to make the built environment more carbon neutral. Insulating homes and buildings with GO Lab’s wood fiber batts, blown in insulation and exterior boards will create tighter building envelopes, thus reducing the need for heating and cooling. GO Lab’s wood fiber batts and exterior boards will cost the same as, or less than, other products on the market, but do so much more. It’s a marriage of environmental sustainability and cost competitiveness that comes at a critical time, as more stringent building codes increasingly demand that structures use less energy and leave less of a carbon footprint. Our team is hard at work, preparing for the launch of a new, cutting-edge manufacturing facility, inside a former paper mill in Madison, Maine. Once operational, this plant will turn daily shipments of wood chips from lumber yards around the state, into cost competitive, environmentally sustainable, transformative insulation products. Demand for our products will breathe new life into Maine’s forest products industry and create good paying jobs that will reinvigorate local economies.

Thank you for this overview of wood fiber insulation, Liam and the UMaine Team. Wood fiber insulation systems will continue to grow across the US and Canada as domestic production capacity and knowledge of differentiating product performance attributes increase. TimberHP is paving the way in North America while the European wood fiber insulation market nears $1b in sales.

Joshua Henry, former UMaine chemistry professor, and Matthew O’Malia founded TimberHP to drive the next generation of sustainable building materials. To achieve this, they revitalized the shuttered Madison paper mill, creating North America’s first wood fiber insulation plant using the waste stream from the lumber industry. Today, they’re manufacturing at scale with UMaine alums and former mill employees on staff, and are partnering with UMaine Advanced Structures & Composites Center for product testing. #UMaine #Maine

OPAL Build is excited to be featured in the November 2024 issue of OFFSITE Builder Magazine! "[OPAL Build] uses a hybrid building system of panelized and modular components to build modern, energy-efficient homes made with cross laminated timber (CLT) and wood fiber insulation. 'The scope of work that we build offsite includes the CLT panels; the windows; the wood fiber insulation; the modular kitchens and bathrooms; and the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) pods,' say Matthew O'Malia, founder of OPAL Build, 'That represents, typically 60% of the project value, so we've been feeling a higher level of confidence about predictability on the cost side.'... O'Malia says the company is focused on replicability. 'CLT has some specific design criteria which, if you work within it, can be very cost competitive.' he says. 'But we have to be very clear with customers when CLT might not be the best choice for their particular design.'"
