My last EEJournal article of the year looks at the fascinating story of the Roland TR-808 drum machine, an early microcontroller-based electronic musical instrument with a specially selected, especially noisy transistor that provided the foundation of the TR-808’s unique percussion sounds. No two TR-808s are exactly alike because no two transistors are equally noisy, and because of its sound, this drum machine became and continues to be the percussion instrument of choice by Hip-hop artists, despite its having been out of production for 40 years. https://lnkd.in/gJ2drAW4

This was posted on EE Times | Electronic Engineering Times a few hours before the jury finished its deliberations. We now all know how it turned out for Qualcomm and Arm but some great insights from this conversation between Jim McGregor and Francis Sideco especially with Jim having had a ring side seat in Delaware. Stay tuned for more analysis and implications of the verdicts over the next few days! https://lnkd.in/gFq9w2ta

The jury returned a split verdict in the Arm-Qualcomm trial. They found that Qualcomm did not breach the Nuvia ALA agreement (Question 2) and that Qualcomm CPUs are covered under the Qualcomm ALA agreement (Question 3). There is no decision on whether Nuvia breached its ALA (Question 1). So, it is officially a mistrial on the first question. Qualcomm will be allowed to continue moving forward with its CPU design efforts and rolling out the resulting CPUs throughout its products under the Qualcomm ALA. It will be up to Arm to decide if it worth pursuing further litigation with Nuvia, a wholly owned Qualcomm subsidiary. From the little I saw of the Nuvia ALA, it was confusing and appeared to be contradicting in certain areas. So, it is not a surprise that the jury could not reach a decision on the contract if the parties to the contract could not agree on its interpretation.

AI isn't just about LLMs. Traditional AI like those used to run vision and sensor hub applications are literally embedded in a significant number of IoT devices, large and small. TIRIAS Research Principal Analyst Francis Sideco takes a deep dive into Lattice Semiconductor's new Nexus 2 Small FPGA platform launched at their recent DevCon to see how they are tackling the demanding and often conflicting requirements of bringing AI to the edge in his latest EE Times | Electronic Engineering Times article. https://lnkd.in/ge-AKQZg
