About us

Tiwahe Foundation is a place for giving — and giving back — that benefits the well-being of American Indian people and communities in Minnesota. We are a community foundation of friends and supporters — Indian and non-Indian — who have resources, time and talents to share. Together, we all work to unleash more philanthropy and generosity that are not only held within every person but also embodied collectively.

Manidoo-Giizisoons (Little Spirit Moon) and Tahecapsun-wi (Moon When Deer Shed Their Horns) reflect the quiet and introspective nature of the season, highlighting the importance of spiritual connection and renewal. 🌕✨ In Ojibwe tradition, Manidoo-Giizisoons is a time to connect with the spirit world and honor the teachings of our ancestors. ✨ This moon encourages us to slow down, listen to the quiet wisdom of winter, and gather together to share stories and traditions. Tahecapsun-wi in Dakota culture represents renewal as deer shed their antlers, signifying the process of letting go to make room for new growth. 🦌 This moon teaches us to embrace transformation and to prepare for the future by releasing what no longer serves us. Join us in honoring these moons as we nurture our spirits, appreciate the beauty of winter, and prepare ourselves for renewal. ❄️🌲 #ManidooGiizisoons #TahecapsunWi #OjibweLanguage #DakotaCulture #TiwaheFoundation #CulturalRevitalization #SpiritConnection #LettingGo #Renewal #HonoringAncestors #WinterReflections

  • 💛 Today, we’re proud to uplift the Indigenous Peoples Task Force, a vital organization supporting our unhoused relatives through culturally grounded health services, youth programs, and community resources. Their work beautifully embodies Waúnšila / Zaagi’idiwin (Love / Compassion)—caring for our relatives with respect, kindness, and a commitment to healing. Their groundbreaking for a new center, Mikwanedon Audisookon, involving Keith Clark, owner of Indigenous Path Construction, and alumni from AIFEP and OLN, highlights how cultural teachings are central to Indigenous wellness. This new space will serve as a foundation of healing, resilience, and community. This #GiveToTheMax, let’s come together to support the Indigenous Peoples Task Force in making this vision a reality—bringing cultural teachings to life and strengthening wellness for generations to come. 🔗 https://buff.ly/3ZxFifV #TiwaheFoundation #IndigenousPeoplesTaskForce #GiveToTheMax #CompassionInAction #HonoringCommunity

  • 🌟Honoring Our 2024 Oyate Leadership Network Summer-Fall Cohort Members on National Native American Heritage Day🌟 Last month, we celebrated the completion of our four-month cohort with an honoring. Join us in recognizing their dedication and exceptional progress in Indigenous Leadership: Naida Medicine Crow ✨ Kari Tribble ✨ Alesha Goodwin ✨ Travis Bush ✨ Serene Eidem ✨ Nicholas DeShaw ✨ Nomi Badboy ✨ Jessica Ahlers ✨ Rachael Norris ✨ Summer Cohen. Fun fact: each cohort member is either an AIFEP grantee, past OLN participant, or both, now proud #OLNAlumni ✨ Through OLN, we uplift traditional ways of knowing within vibrant learning communities. We are inspired to see our alumni already actively incorporating what they've learned into their personal, professional, and community lives, truly embodying the spirit of #IndigenousLeadership. Our goals include developing mental strengths through facilitated experiences and the application of traditional wisdom. We aim to foster active, reciprocal relationships through skill-building and communication while instilling a sense of belonging and empathy within our community. Together, we honor each individual's unique gifts, walking in a good way. Miigwech | Pidamáyaye | Thank You, to our cohort members for your commitment to personal growth and community empowerment. Together, we are shaping a brighter future! 💪❤️ #OyateLeadershipNetwork #OLN #AIFEP #IndigenousPhilanthropy

  • 🦃 This Thanksgiving, Honor Through Action 🌿  At Tiwahe Foundation, we believe that true honor comes from action and self-reflection.  🌍 Reflect on Your Role: How does your presence on Mni Sota Makoce contribute to colonization? What specific actions will you take to support Native peoples in achieving true self-determination? Recognize that colonization isn’t just history—it’s a current, lived experience impacting Native communities every day.  📚 Listen and Learn from Indigenous Voices: Seek out and amplify the stories of Indigenous leaders reclaiming their rights, culture, and sovereignty. Explore works from our Tiwahe community like James Vukelich’s The Seven Generations and the Seven Grandfather Teachings and Donna Council’s Golden-Brown Indian Girl: A Small Voice Gets LOUDER. Understanding these stories is a crucial step toward meaningful allyship.  🤝 Support Native-Led Initiatives: Join the movement for Indigenous leadership by contributing to Native-led organizations that empower communities, protect sacred lands, and promote self-determination.  This season, let’s move beyond acknowledgment and take responsibility for our part in this shared history. 🔗 Give back today: https://lnkd.in/g9zVbHia #MniSotaMakoce #NationalDayOfMourning #IndigenousPhilanthropy #TiwaheFoundation #LandBack

  • 🌍✨Celebrating Our LinkingLeaders Partnership!✨🌍 We are thrilled to highlight our partners, the African American Leadership Forum, Coalition of Asian American Leaders, and Latino Lead! Together, we are building deep reciprocal relationships vital in our journey toward true solidarity. Recently, Baswewe Gayle, Tiwahe's LinkingLeaders Managing Director, curated two days for our LinkingLeaders network, and an enriching day for each orgs MD's. Participants enjoyed a delicious lunch from Gatherings Cafe and the Indigenous Food Lab at MNHS, fueling our discussions and connections. The MD's gathering day was dedicated to experiencing MNHS collection materials, photographs, and exhibits that shed light on personal and historical contexts, allowing us to share our Native roots, experiences, and perspectives. By sharing our stories and histories, we contribute to a strong foundation for solidarity work that enables us to stand together in strength and unity. Together, we are creating a powerful movement for change! ✊🏽❤️ #LinkingLeaders #Solidarity #ReciprocalRelationships #CommunityStrength #LiberationWork

  • ✨ Last night felt like coming home. We celebrated our first round of 2024 AIFEP grantees—not just honoring their achievements but making visible our collective movement to strengthen Indigenous leadership and cultural identity. Moments like these highlight the importance of gathering together to recognize and uplift one another. 🎨 Each grantee received a beautiful art piece by our 2024 Artist of the Year, Thomasina Topbear. 🌿 Tiwahe Foundation is more than an organization; we’re a hub where our cultures thrive and relationships flourish. It means having a relative wherever you go. We’re proud to be a space where our community gathers, our traditions are honored, and our stories are shared. ✨ Stay tuned as we introduce our grantees and shine a spotlight on Thomisina’s inspiring work. #AIFEP #TiwaheFoundation #IndigenousLeadership #StrengthInCommunity #IndigenousPhilanthropy

  • 🪶 For too long, Native peoples have been erased from the American narrative, our stories left untold, and our contributions overlooked—fueling a cycle of invisibility that we’re working hard to break. 🌟 That’s why we’re proud to support USA Today’s Native American Heritage Month Special Edition, dedicated entirely to the hard work being done across Indian Country to carry our cultures forward. This publication showcases how Indigenous knowledge systems hold answers to today’s most pressing issues, from environmental stewardship to community well-being. 🌿 We invite you to explore stories of resilience, innovation, and leadership from Native communities across the country including some familiar faces from the Tiwahe community. 📖 Read the special edition here: https://lnkd.in/gMzX5fBD #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth #TiwaheFoundation #CelebrateNativeVoices #IndigenousResilience

  • Pictured is Tiwahe ED, Nikki Pieratos, making evaluative observations at our Oyate Leadership gathering as we prepare to share out our impacts, because it’s important for the field that we demonstrate how Indigenous models work best… It’s important to document our impacts in writing, even though as we heard this gem yesterday at MDH’s #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth2024 panel, “Just because it’s not published, doesn’t mean it’s not happening.” - Natalie Nicholson (co-presented with CoCo Villaluz & Nikki Pieratos). Miigwech/Pidamayaye to Kris Rhodes at MDH for the invitation to share with your employees!
