President Tinubu's Landmark Decision Enhances Nigeria's Pension System In a historic move during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on February 4, 2025, the Nigerian government took a significant step toward reforming the country’s pension administration. This decision marks the first time the Federal Government has allocated funds to the Pension Protection Fund, which was established in 2014 but had remained unfunded until now. The Pension Protection Fund is designed to boost pensions for low-income earners. Additionally, President Tinubu’s intervention addresses long-standing pension issues, clearing all pension increases dating back to 2007, and resolving the shortfall in university professors' pensions, ensuring they receive their full salary as pension. PenCom's Director General, Ms. Omolola Oloworaran, praised President Tinubu’s leadership, commending his decisive and compassionate actions in resolving critical pension issues. She highlighted that this move not only restores dignity to retirees but also strengthens public trust in the pension system, a core objective of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS). Oloworaran emphasized that the president’s forward-thinking approach guarantees timely pension payments for retirees, reinforcing the commitment to uphold the rights and dignity of Nigerian pensioners. She called on all stakeholders to collaborate swiftly on the bond issuance to bring the president’s vision for a sustainable and equitable pension system to fruition.
