𝐒𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐮𝐩 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞 𝐛𝐲𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐧 Reducing bycatch and other fisheries interactions with vulnerable species remains a main priority for 𝐓𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐞𝐝. Building on the successes of the 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐁𝐲𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 project (Phases I and II) that took place between 2017 and 2023, where we: 🐬 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 across Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey, Italy, and Croatia 🛥️ Engaged over 𝟏𝟎𝟎 𝐟𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬 in training and awareness programmes 📊 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐨𝐧 𝐛𝐲𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 rates and species, informing policy and management decisions We are now going to focus on 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐮𝐩 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞 𝐛𝐲𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 in the Mediterranean Sea. 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐜𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥? Because 𝐛𝐲𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 pose significant threats to vulnerable marine species like sea turtles, marine mammals, sharks, rays, and seabirds. These issues also impact the sustainability and profitability of the fisheries sector. Our efforts will aim to: 🔹 𝐒𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐞-𝐮𝐩 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 to reduce bycatch of vulnerable species 🔹 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞 𝐠𝐚𝐩𝐬 across a multi-taxa data collection on bycatch 🔹 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐟𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 to implement effective mitigation measures 🔹 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬 to enhance fisheries sustainability while protecting vulnerable species Through these initiatives, we aim to protect marine biodiversity and support the livelihoods of those who depend on the sea. 𝐓𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥-𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞! Exciting news! After nearly two decades of persistent advocacy by WWF Greece and partners, Greece has issued a Ministerial Decision providing financial support to small-scale fishers affected by interactions with marine protected species. This is an important first step to compensate fishers for their economic losses and protect marine biodiversity! The adoption of this financial measure wouldn’t have been possible without years of dedicated work, including through the InCa project, a proud part of the Together for Med network. Thanks to the efforts of Together for the Med Greek partners, a tangible step has been made towards compensating fishers and protecting marine biodiversity. Let’s celebrate this milestone and continue working for a harmonious coexistence of humans and marine life!
