  • Creating an Engaging Community: Insights from Dan of CoUnity 🚀 We had a Dan Rodman on our Space sharing his experience building thriving communities. CoUnity has been working with some major players in crypto, helping them grow by aligning community members’ incentives with the project’s goal. Here are 3 tried and tested methods for creating an engaging community: ✅ Experiment with Different Initiatives: Don't just stick to one format (like AMAs or game nights) — try a variety of initiatives to see which ones resonate most with your community. This experimentation can lead to organic community growth as you fine-tune what works! ✅ Prioritize Trust and Relationships: As you engage with your community, focus on building trust. The more relationships you nourish, the stronger your community becomes. Encourage members to connect and share their experiences, fostering an environment of collaboration. ✅ Utilize Data-Driven Insights: Use community analytics to understand who your community members are, their behaviors, and the value they derive from your project. This info helps tailor your approach and initiatives to better serve them. Now, here's what NOT to do as a community manager: ❌ Avoid Overloading with Extrinsic Motivation: While incentives can boost engagement, too much can lead to noise and discourage genuine connections. Focus on meaningful engagement over quick wins. ❌ Don’t Neglect Community Feedback: Ignoring the voices of your community can alienate them. Regularly gather feedback and iterate on your strategies! ❌ Avoid Going Solo: Don’t try to manage everything on your own. Building a community is a team effort—lean on your peers and develop a strong team to support your initiatives.   • Building vibrant communities isn't just about gathering people—it's about creating spaces where value is exchanged, voices are heard, and connections multiply. We've looked at the data, our own and what research says, and this is what we found: Mutual Value Exchange: The heart of any thriving community lies in the value its members bring to each other. Newcomers find support, while questions are met with answers. Ask any community managers how they know their community is doing well. The answer is "members helping each other"! We've looked a bit further and noticed that the first 7 days are pivotal—making a person feel welcomed during this period can make or break their engagement with you. The Power of Sub-Groups: Flourishing communities often have sub-groups or niches within the main group. These niches aren't silos; they're interconnected, with each having 1-5 key players who bridge the gap between different interest groups. The interest groups can be different languages, regions or interests like crypto folks who love gardening. Balanced Dialogue: Successful communities excel in sharing the "talking time." They avoid the pitfalls of lengthy monologues or dominant voices. Instead, they encourage dialogue, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to contribute and be heard.   • After analyzing feedback from 100+ community managers, one thing became clear: we're drowning in vanity metrics while missing the numbers that truly matter. Here are the 3 metrics that actually define community success, and how AI is transforming how we measure them: 1. Active Member Ratio: Community managers want to know who is genuinely contributing and adding value. AI can analyze conversation patterns to distinguish between genuine engagement and superficial activity. 2: Knowledge Sharing Index: How effectively is information flowing through your community? It's now easier to track and score peer-to-peer support rates and question-to-answer ratios. We're working on having questions be detected automatically by our AI so members get help even faster. 3: Member Retention Rate: Beyond basic retention numbers, AI helps understand: Why members stay active What conversations keep them engaged Which interactions lead to long-term participation One Web3 community we studied reduced churn by 60% by acting on these insights. Depending on the focus of the community, some metrics are more important than others. For example, in a DAO or practice-oriented community knowledge sharing is crucial for effective coordination. Whereas in a product-oriented community, member tech support is important. Now, keep in mind AI is not the silver bullet for everything. It still needs to be trained and fine-tuned. It's not yet plug and play. But it's a tremendous step forward to manually counting posts and recording emoji reactions in a spreadsheet!

Holling's Nested Systems Model, we understand that communities operate within layers of interconnected systems. This means that nurturing relationships and subgroups is key to maintaining a dynamic and thriving organization. Successful DAOs are those that can bounce back from challenges and adapt to changes. This idea of resilience and adaptability is also discussed by experts like Walker and colleagues, who highlight the importance of being able to innovate and transform in response to shifts inside and outside of the community. Echoing insights from Baumeister and Leary, a community’s longevity depends on members finding real value in their participation. For those in the Web3 sphere, focusing on community health means fostering environments where members feel connected and valued. As noted by Blanchard, a strong sense of belonging is what ties people together, aligning personal goals with the community’s mission. By applying these academic insights, we can ensure our digital communities are not only stable but also open to innovation and resilience.   • The 1:9:90 rule isn’t new. It’s a fine-tuning of the well-known Pareto principle: 80% of content is generated by 20% of people. I’ve seen it in the classroom and I’m seeing it now in communities. 🔍 The Pareto principle adapted to community buildings translates into this: 1% of users are creators who generate the majority of content. 9% of users are contributors who engage with and add to existing content. 90% are lurkers who consume content but rarely engage. 🤖 Knowing this, where does AI fit into this? Funnily, best with the lurkers. Yes, those who you don’t hear anything about. Two reasons for this: 1. There are a LOT of people. That means they have a LOT of questions. AI answering some of them will free up some time. 2. Lurkers lurk because they are still figuring out what is ok to post. We all know someone who got burned, ridiculed or worse because of what they posted. Getting an AI to answer their questions creates safety. And once they feel safe talking with an AI, they’ll also feel safe talking with others. Gradually they transform from lurkers to active members. Next to lurkers, AI is also great for the 9% of active contributors. These members are normally contributing in several communities. Anything that you can do to make contributions easier and less taxing, they’ll be thanking you for every. I would, because I’ve wasted too much time searching through communities for a specific post.   • It's always shocking when engagement goes down. The best approach is to figure out why this is happening. Check: (1) Was there a sudden spike? (2) Is there a trend? Look for spikes If you use TogetherCrew for engagement metrics, members have to be inactive for 2 weeks before we tag them as disengaged (because people have a life outside of your community). If you see a drop today, go back two weeks in your Discord. Begin with the announcement channel. Most probably people were excited about something. 9 out of 10 times when a user asks why their numbers went down, this is the reason. If not that, cycle through your channels until you find what caused a spike and why (people happy vs people pissed off). Look for trends Extend your time window to look at your engagement metrics for a month (for more you need to switch to the premium price) and find the inflection point. The point when your numbers start dropping. That was the easy part. The hard part is deciding what to do with that information. Here context is king.
