As we continue to celebrate Pride month and pay homage to those figures who jumpstarted and advocated for the modern LGBTQ+ movement, we would also like to take a moment to “Spotlight” those who are currently helping pave the way for a more inclusive Toll Brothers. Meet Peter Lam, MBA, CBT, Division Controller, from our Georgia division office. “Many people have probably heard this statement before, but many of us spend more of our waking hours with our colleagues and coworkers than with our families. Can you imagine how tiring and difficult it must be if you can’t be your true self at work over the span of weeks, months, or even years? Flip it on and off like a switch from when you lock the front door to when you finally click “Shut Down” on your laptop. I’m fortunate to say that how I present myself at work is exactly the same as at home. I am my most genuine self 24/7, and I celebrate being able to do that at Toll. I think that having that type of culture where folks don’t feel pressure to suppress certain traits or aspects of themselves is how we continue to innovate. We nurture an environment of openness and authenticity that leads to more outflow of ideas, collaboration, and execution from all sides of the table. I honestly believe that being myself from day one, with no acts or airs, has earned me a great deal of trust and rapport from both the divisions I serve and my team. “

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, and Emancipation Day, is a holiday celebrating the emancipation of those who had been enslaved in the United States. Though most states ended slavery after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation of 1863, it took over two years for the news to arrive in Galveston, Texas. Major General Gordon Granger's arrival and proclamation freed the last of over 200,000 Texan slaves on June 19, 1865. At Toll Brothers, our BELIEVE Employee Resource Group helped educate our employees on the significance of this holiday. Thank you to our BELIEVE co-chairs, Crystal Vecchione and Bryson Echols, for keeping us informed. The picture below features BELIEVE Co-Chairs Bryson Echols (L), Business Analyst, and Crystal Vecchione (C), Employee Relations Manager, with their ERG Executive Sponsor, Thomas Murray (R), Regional President, FL, IL, MI, and SC.

As we celebrate Pride month and pay homage to those figures who jumpstarted and advocated for the modern LGBTQ+ movement, we would also like to take a moment to “Spotlight” those who are currently helping pave the way for a more inclusive Toll Brothers. Meet Miquel Hutton, Director of Design Studio Product Management. “For a long time earlier in my life, I felt like I had to keep any mention of my partner as lowkey as possible. I was never sure how people would respond or if being more open would impact any opportunities that may present themselves. I’ve long since learned that trying to sequester that part of my life can be really tiring, but the good news is that I’ve never felt that way at Toll. As part of the National Design Studio team, I feel like my coworkers are more than accepting of me, which makes it really easy for me to be open about my life. Not only do I feel comfortable talking about my husband, Kyle, but the team also knows who he is, and they always ask if he’s with me whenever I travel to Corporate Headquarters or conventions. It’s hard to express how much that means to me. Feeling like I have the freedom to be myself has certainly made me more comfortable with being confident when proposing ideas or putting myself out there for new opportunities. I don’t have that gnawing, “Are they going to like me if they know I’m gay?” question in the back of my mind, and you would be surprised at how much that can make you pull back so you’re not the center of attention. I also think that Toll doesn’t just talk the talk when it comes to being accepting and supportive, we also walk the walk, and that’s really important for new hires, especially younger ones, who might not feel comfortable with being their authentic selves. Representation MATTERS.”

What makes Toll Brothers a great place to work is, without a doubt – our employees. To acknowledge those who have given so much to our success, we give eligible employees a company-paid trip (and vacation time) when they reach their 10, 20, and 30-year anniversary. Mike Ervin, Human Resources Business Partner, recently celebrated his 10-year milestone trip by taking a trip to Curaçao. “I celebrated my milestone by traveling to Curaçao, an island just off the coast of Venezuela, with my wife Julia, who had just finished her last treatment after beating stage 3 Triple Negative Breast Cancer. Needless to say, we had a lot to celebrate, and the trip couldn’t have come at a more perfect time! We stayed at the Sandals Royal Curaçao resort and had the best time! My favorite thing about working at Toll is my Toll Family! I feel like I grew up here, and the people here truly feel like an extension of my family. My Toll family has been there to celebrate all the highs in my life, and they’ve been there to support and pick me up through the challenging times, too. I’m very proud to tell people I work for Toll Brothers, and I feel even more proud when I tell them how great it is to work here.”

Today, we’re featuring Meghan Metcalf, Executive Assistant, Texas-Dallas. Meghan and her family visited our Guesthouse in Jersey City. “I took my father and my twin sons to the Jersey City Guesthouse. The location was the best feature because it was super easy to get to New York City. This trip was more for my dad, who has always wanted to visit every MLB stadium. During the trip, we planned to visit four stadiums in the surrounding area to watch the Mets, Orioles, Phillies, and Yankees play. My twin boys joined us for the game at Citi Field Stadium in Queens. Then, my dad and I took a one-day train trip to Baltimore to see the Orioles, followed by another train trip the next day to Philadelphia to see the Phillies. On our last day, we went to Yankee Stadium. This was a dream trip for my 74-year-old dad. Having these guesthouses makes things so much more affordable to go to places like this and allows people like my dad to live out their dreams.”
