People who have fled their homes are often excluded from accessing vital information due to language barriers, marginalization, or being unable to speak the host country's language. Language exclusion means we fail to address the needs and rights of refugees and displaced people worldwide. Since February 2022, nearly 6.5 million people from Ukraine have been recorded as displaced globally. We have been working with organizations across Europe to navigate and overcome language barriers, so refugees can access vital information and services. Standing #WithRefugees, our efforts in Ukraine and across Poland, Romania, and Moldova have focused on: ➡️ Providing language training, tools, and guidance: empowering organizations to offer more inclusive and effective support. ➡️ Researching language barriers: by studying the language needs of people already in vulnerable situations, organizations can ensure critical information reaches those who need it most. ➡️ Supporting access to reliable information: our AI gateway 'Kompas' helps refugees navigate information landscapes, access essential services and get support in their language. Our work has assisted: ➡️ Refugees who could not speak the language of their host country. ➡️ First-language Russian speakers transitioning to Ukrainian. ➡️ Members of the Roma community. ➡️ Older adults with limited digital access who struggle with predominantly digital information channels. CLEAR Global's newly updated Ukraine resources are designed to continue this vital support. Each year on June 20, the world observes World Refugee Day, celebrating the strength and courage of those forced to flee their home countries. Some of our amazing members and volunteers are refugees and this year, for #WorldRefugeeDay we're calling on our #TWB Community to participate in our campaign! Throughout this week, we will share stories from our community and highlight some of our projects that support refugees through language inclusion, and we want you to participate! How can you participate? ➡️Join us in showing solidarity with those forced to flee and help amplify their voices. This week, share our stories on your social media, using the hashtag #CLEARWithRefugees. ➡️ We're looking for volunteers to send us a picture holding a piece of paper with the phrase "#SolidarityWithRefugees" translated into your language. Did you know? ➡️ Most humanitarian digital services are only available in a narrow range of languages and many communities facing crisis have no access to digital services in their own language ➡️ Failing to provide language-inclusive services can exacerbate personal risks like fraud, especially for groups already experiencing low financial and digital literacy ➡️ The biggest obstacles to language-inclusive services are cost and limitations in language technology.
