One of our Medical Advisory Board Members is Dr. Jafri, from Henry Ford Heath. He is a specialist in Gastroenterology, Transplant Hepatology. We asked him: "Are Intestinal Failure, Intestinal Rehab patients eligible to donate blood?" His answer: "Patients with acute intestinal failure should not donate. For stable patients with adequate intestinal rehabilitation, there is no formal guidance on blood donation. It should be individualized. If a patient is medically stable, on stable fluid or nutritional support and has a normal hemoglobin and iron profile then donation can be considered with the approval of a physician." We were thrilled to see our Medical Advisory Board member, Dr. Segovia, an Assistant Professor of Medicine, a Hepatologist, a Liver Transplant Specialist, and a Small Intestine Transplant Specialist from Duke University Hospital at the International Pediatric Intestinal Failure and Rehabilitation Symposium. We asked her "What is your most important take away from the PIFRS 2024 Symposoim? Her response: "This being the first time I attended this meeting, one of the things I took away is the great efforts and collaboration that take place in order to ensure a good transition of care for adolescents and young adults when they move from the pediatric to the adult world. This is extremely important."

At the 2024 International Pediatric Intestinal Failure and Rehabilitation Symposium, we asked Dr. Ajai Khanna, MD, PhD, FACS, FRCS, a Professor of Surgery and a Pediatric Transplant Surgeon at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, what was his most important take away from the symposium. His answer: "In medical conferences like this, participation by patients, family members, and those at the receiving end brings a valuable perspective to the management of complex diseases that lead to intestinal failure."

Holiday traditions are often centered around food. Living with Short Bowel Syndrome, Intestinal Failure, Dysmotility, Celiac disease, and other digestive disorders and sensitivities can make these food-centered activities extra stressful. You are not alone this holiday season. Check out a few pointers from our Community Perspectives. https://lnkd.in/gDgpVTYu
