So many workers—especially parents, caregivers, and those navigating life’s unexpected challenges—need flexibility. They want part-time hours right now but plan to return to full-time work later. What they’re looking for is a bridge. The problem? That bridge doesn’t exist here. Unlike other industrialized countries, the U.S. lacks the right to work part-time and protections against discrimination in pay, promotion, and job security for part-time employees. The result: ➡️ Many people leave the workforce entirely, taking their skills and experience with them. ➡️ Those who stay often work “full-time” hours on part-time pay, fighting an uphill battle for boundaries. ➡️ Women, in particular, are disproportionately affected. Economists estimate that robust part-time policies could have a bigger impact on labor force participation than even universal childcare. Freelancers face similar challenges. As someone who’s freelanced to balance caregiving and work, I’ve experienced the trade-offs firsthand. While the flexibility was invaluable, it came at the cost of no health benefits, no paid time off, and no safety net. Freelancers provide immense value, yet they bear the financial risks alone. We need to do better. Policies like: ✅ The right to part-time work. ✅ Anti-discrimination protections for part-time employees. ✅ Portable benefits for freelancers. These changes could transform lives and strengthen the labor market. It’s time we stop forcing people to choose between stability and flexibility. As I reflect on my collaboration with David T. Stevens®, PMED and the journey we’ve had producing the Return On Wellness Show, I’m filled with gratitude and pride. It all started when I mentioned to my friend Lisa Mendenhall Johnson that I’d be attending IMEX a few years back. Naturally, I asked her if she would be there and if there were any must-meet individuals. Without hesitation, she mentioned David. I reached out on LinkedIn, and what followed was a serendipitous connection that gave birth to the now infamous IMEX Push-Up Challenge. Who knew a bit of banter could spark such a lasting partnership? Fast forward to beginning of 2023, as I launched the Mental and Fitness season of the Events: demystified Podcast Podcast, I invited David to join me for an episode. What followed was a meaningful and inspiring conversation, during which David shared that he was contemplating starting his own podcast. When he asked for my help, I eagerly agreed, not realizing just how logistically complex an in-person podcast series would be. But I was ready for the challenge. Since that initial idea, we’ve produced 24 episodes, each recorded on location across the U.S. It’s been a ride—demanding, rewarding, and incredibly fun. Together, we’ve brought to life not just the podcast itself but so many of other creative ideas, from building David’s custom wellness GPT and creating his personalized intro avatar to pulling off some of his wildest concepts. It’s been an equally creative process fueled by two talented, hardworking individuals who aren’t afraid to think big and make it happen. Each episode has been a roaring success, culminating in Season Two with a fantastic conversation featuring Dan J. Berger that will conclude this season, to air soon. Now, as we look ahead to Season Three, I can confidently say it’s going to be bigger and better than ever. David, thank you for trusting me to bring your vision to life and for embracing all my ideas—yes, even the crazy ones—and for sharing yours with equal enthusiasm. You’ve been more than a client; you’re a friend and now a partner in the #FIT4EVENTS Olympian Wellness initiative.
