Half of U.S. counties have five or fewer home health agencies per 1,000 square miles, with many rural areas having access to only one agency or no agencies serving more than 10 patients. In contrast, urban areas like Manhattan, NY and Arlington County, VA boast hundreds of agencies per 1,000 square miles. This urban-rural disparity can potentially exacerbate health inequities, leaving rural Medicare FFS beneficiaries with limited or no access to skilled home health services while urban residents have far greater options.
