Maximizing vessel intake requires proper planning and discipline to ensure each cargo is placed precisely. Maintaining clearance for lashing and lifting practices is a requirement for safety and efficiency. Evaluating cargo drawings and load lists, followed by inspecting units prior to loading mitigates surprises once operations start. These are just a few of the steps that a #PortCaptain takes when tasked with loading #Breakbulk #ProjectCargo #Shipping #Logistics #EfficiencyIsSafety

Staging a hold for cargo is a critical step in loading. Precise measurements are necessary for the placement of stoppers. This is a case where pipe is loaded in a hold with bulkhead shaping. The preparation includes H-beams placed to create a transverse securement and to allow multiple tiers of pipe to be loaded in this area without the bottom tier rolling out. Establishing a criteria for stopper size and quantity is crucial for the safety of both loading and transit for this cargo. #Engineering #PortCaptain #Breakbulk #Pipe #Shipping #Logistics #Supercargo

Securing large cargo is often completed by using welded steel components. The capacity of each element in relation to the necessary securing requirement will determine how many are required. However, the vessel structure can only sustain these load concentrations in specific areas. While smaller steel plates or H beams are easier for welders to handle, the increased quantity may not be sustainable over the vessel's structure. Finding a happy medium between quantity and size often leads to operational efficiency and speed. #Engineering #PortCaptain #ProjectCargo #Heavylift

Crane scales and outreach figures are useful data points for a #PortCaptain when performing multiple lifts. Logging these figures during a lift helps save time on subsequent lifts. Identifying crane outreach figures in relation to parts of the vessel allows the Port Captain to gauge available space and possibly improve stowage. Additionally, crane scales can help determine a cargo C.G. location when lifting in tandem. #Planning #Lifting #CraneOperation #Heavylift #ProjectCargo #Breakbulk

Synchronization is key for effective tandem lift operations. Handling large cargo for expansion projects is a pillar of the #heavylift world and having the expertise to complete the task makes all of the difference. With proper planning, #communication and execution, these awesome cargoes are able to move around the world. Passing from one mode to another, #ProjectCargo really is quite a project. #Shipping #PortCaptain #Logistics #Heavyhaul #Engineering

Supporting trailers with pig-pens requires specific placement and size. The placement of cribbing is critical for the stability of the cargo and the securing method. To distribute weight evenly across multiple pig-pens, flat dunnage is used to shim the height of each location. This accounta for variance in the vessels deck plate and different parts of the cargo. Lashing chain secures the cargo over these stable supports. Chain angles produce vertical and horizontal components to limit motion in multiple axis. #CargoHandling #Securing #Engineering #Transportation #Logistics #ProjectCargo #Breakbulk #PortCaptain

Handling #ProjectCargo requires precise planning to determine suitable placement onboard. Evaluating deck strength is critical for the safety of the Cargo, Vessel and Crew. Identifying the locations of deck structure elements in relation to the footing design of the cargo will dictate the bedding options for safely distributing the weight of the cargo onto the deck of the vessel. When measurements align, there may not be a need for extra weight distributing elements. Flat dunnage can be used in this case to provide an increased frictional coefficient and protect the paint. #CargoHandling #PortCaptain #Engineering #Logistics #Shipping #Breakbulk #HeavyLift

Pipe comes in many sizes, weights, and coating types. Coatings often have pressure limits which dictate the number of tiers for a stack of pipe. Bedding materials also need to distribute localized pressure from the weight of the stack on the bottom tier of the pipe. Having ample size and quantity of bedding material is critical. Polymer rings or ropes are used to create a gap between the pipe coatings to pass lifting straps under pipes. These materials may also serve to enhance the tractive force between pipes. #Survey #CargoHandling #Breakbulk #Pipe #Shipping #Logistics #SupplyChain

Long-link lashing chain is commonly used for securing cargo. With all of its capabilities and advantages come weaknesses. Proper application is critical for utilizing this chain to its fullest potential. Unlike short-link or trucking chain, long-link chain cannot bend around sharp corners. While a loop-type connection, as seen here, is a suitable connecting method, a D-ring is too small for this method. The chains' hook should always be used, where able, to connect the chain to a securing point or cargo. Looped connections are suitable for large trunnions, or when wrapping around large structural components. When long-link chain bends around a sharp edge or small radius the force on the links changes from tensile to bending which will result in a failure like this. #CargoSecuring #ProjectCargo #Breakbulk #Heavylift #Chain #Lashing #Surveying #PortCaptain
