As winter weather approaches, protecting your pipes from the cold is crucial. To minimize the risk of freezing, try letting faucets drip, leaving kitchen and bathroom cabinets open to allow warm air to circulate around your plumbing, and insulating outdoor faucets.

The Trinity River Authority has been busy making a positive impact on our local watersheds through our litter and illegal dumping initiative! On Oct. 19, we held our inaugural cleanup event at the Lake Arlington Dam, where we removed 1,540 lbs. of trash, five large tires, and more from two acres of shoreline. Thanks to the cooperation of the cities of Fort Worth and Arlington, as well as Constellation Energy, we were able to reach previously submerged areas and make a significant difference. On Dec. 7, our volunteers gathered at Bowman Branch near Arlington/Grand Prairie. We removed over 1,600 lbs. of debris, including shingles, bottles, and fishing lures, helping to improve the environment near Joe Pool Lake. This initiative, prepared in collaboration with the North Central Texas Council of Governments and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, is dedicated to tackling litter and illegal dumping in our watersheds. Join us for our next cleanup at Lake Arlington on Jan. 25. Stay tuned for more details to get involved in keeping our rivers and lakes clean!

This week, TRA environmental scientists Ryan Seymour, Meghan Craft and Logan Tidwell were guest instructors for multiple Fort Worth ISD AP Biology classes. TRA staff worked alongside Tarrant Regional Water District and Fort Worth ISD teacher Andrew Brinker to develop a curriculum that introduced students to the basics of water quality monitoring and fisheries science in North Central Texas. Before the lab, students were introduced to key terms, methodologies and identification techniques in the classroom. Then, alongside TRA and TRWD scientists, the students used those methods to collect fish community and water quality data from the West Fort Trinity River behind their campus. Students gained hands-on experience in authentic scientific research, collecting valuable data using the same rigorous protocols as TRA and TRWD scientists. Brinker will use the datasets collected by the students to teach lessons on data analysis, statistics and science communication to prepare them for their upcoming AP Biology exam this spring.
