Thank you, Reagan Paul, a member of the Maine House of Representatives representing the 37th House district for introducing LD 1549, to study the potential benefits of advanced nuclear reactors to meet the clean energy goals for Maine. The rest of the country is embracing a new generation of nuclear energy to provide reliable, affordable base load power keeping the lights and heat on when wind and solar are not producing enough power. Sadly, the bill was killed by those clinging “to old ideas about subsidized solar panels and experimental offshore wind turbines.” As Reagan noted, ”This decision wasn’t just short-sighted; it ignored Maine’s urgent need for cost-effective, reliable energy solutions. Nearly 60 percent of Mainers struggle to afford basic necessities, and our current energy policies are only making life harder for families and businesses.” Maine and the country need more legislators like Reagan looking to the future with pragmatic energy solutions instead of unachievable ideals. Appreciate the opportunity provided by Breaking Defense to counter blatant misinformation from Prof Alan Kuperman and the Nuclear Prevention Proliferation Project (LBJ School The University of Texas at Austin) about initiatives underway for nuclear power to meet national security needs for resilient energy. We welcome a public discussion on advanced nuclear power with the NPPP at any future forum. More importantly, while we understand the intent of the NPPP endowment to help combat the spread of nuclear weapons, we question the lack of scholarly analysis and peer review in the positions proffered by the NPPP. More forward progress on nuclear power...

As was announced in June 2024 at the Nuclear Energy Security Summit co-sponsored by #UCANPower, the US Navy formally expressed its interest to explore nuclear power to support energy security at Navy and Marine Corps installations and their surrounding communities. While the RFI at link focuses on four Navy installations and three Marine Corps installations for an initial assessment of DON locations that could be used for nuclear power, additional installations may be considered beyond the 7 bases in VA, MD, and NC. Outstanding news for those States. Now, all three military services have active engagements with nuclear power developers and utilities to meet energy resilience and reliability goals through the placement of nuclear reactor on or near military bases. As with the other Service initiatives, we look forward to supporting Asst Secretary of the Navy (EIE), Meredith Berger and the Navy team on this critical endeavor for our Nation’s energy future. Congrats to DOD SCO's Jeff Waksman, INL's Jess Gehin, and the #BWXT Advanced Technologies team on a significant milestone to meet the joint urgent operational need for a resilient, carbon-free energy source capable of delivering reliable 24/7 power to mission-critical DoD operations in remote and austere environments. In a contested logistics theaters where power generators are under assault, we'll need to the ability to quickly establish an assured power source for a technology advantage on the battlefield. We at UCAN are committed to supporting the successful deployment of #PELE for national security.
