Dr. Stuart H. Cohen, chief of infection diseases at UC Davis Health and director of hospital epidemiology and infection control, is our next "From Labs to Lives" feature. UC Davis research, led by Dr. Cohen, is developing cutting-edge strategies that reduce the risks of surgical site infections (SSIs) that can lead to severe complications. The research is focused on infection control for immunocompromised patients, antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and innovative vaccine solutions to prevent life-threatening post-surgical infections. Dr. Cohen's research has begun to shape better protocols and drive vaccine development to fight antibiotic-resistant infections, reducing amputations and hospitalizations. Sustained investment from federal funding is essential to continuing advancements, protecting lives and improving patient outcomes. We're thrilled to share that once again, our School of Medicine is among the nation’s leading medical schools for National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding! According to the latest Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research ranking, our medical school ranked 33rd nationally. Our NIH funding — nearly $210 million — is a new record for the school. “These new rankings reflect our continued national leadership in life-saving research breakthroughs,” said Susan Murin, dean of the UC Davis School of Medicine. “From our BrainGate clinical trial of the most accurate brain-computer interface of its kind that translates brain signals into speech, to our development of the world’s first stem cell treatment for spina bifida during fetal surgery, our school’s research community is making discoveries that are transforming lives. Support for biomedical research has never been more important — lives depend upon it.” Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gAnBvt7E

Liberty Mutual recently awarded our California Tower contractor, McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., its Gold Safety Award for outstanding workplace safety in 2024! The Gold Safety Award is the highest recognition policyholders can achieve. It is presented to companies that meet rigorous criteria, including maintaining a U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics DART (days away from work, days of restricted work activity or job transfer) rate that is at least 80% better than the industry average. The McCarthy team has demonstrated exceptional dedication to safety, as well as a commitment throughout all levels of the organization to consistent visibility in the field while building a culture of empowerment and accountability. “UC Davis Health is truly thankful for the attention and importance that McCarthy places on safety on each job they build. It is amazing to have a team as large as this one with such strict compliance to safety standards in the industry leading one of the largest health care projects in the country, said Jill Tomczyk, executive director of strategic projects. Congratulations! 👏

On a Sunday last November, Josephine Falvey, a nurse in the post-anesthesia unit, performed 7-minutes of life-saving CPR in the middle of a parking lot. Richard Kreis collapsed in what appeared to be a seizure as Falvey arrived for work. Falvey turned him sideways and checked his pulse. None. She immediately started chest compression for 3 minutes. When some Emergency Department staff arrived, Falvey had just finished her third round of CPR. Responders quickly got Richard Kreis on a gurney and rushed him to the ED, performing CPR the entire way. Once there, a team treated him for cardiac arrest and performed defibrillation followed by a Tenecteplase, a medication used to break apart blood clots. Cardiologists then performed catheterization, threading a small tube through a blood vessel to the heart, identifying the likely location of the blockage, and implanted an arterial stent. After a heart attack, a patient faces a significant risk of neurological damage, especially the longer their brain goes without oxygen. Richard and his wife were now focused on recovery. “I just feel completely shocked at the outcome of this. His recovery is the most incredible thing I’ve ever seen in my career as a nurse. I feel at a complete loss for words,” Falvey said. By Thursday, Richard Kreis’ breathing tube had been removed. His voice was hoarse and his throat sore, but his spirits were high.
