UC Law Journal was proud to partner with Berkeley Law’s California Constitution Center to bring together voices from across California, including Chief Justice Patricia Guerrero and retired Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye last week at the 2024 SCOCA Conference. This was the first time the conference has been held since COVID. We would like to congratulate Andrew Jacobs, Nithya Kiron, and Gabriella Olk for their amazing work in organizing this incredible event! Reflecting on the event, Nithya, Senior SCOCA Editor, shared: “The conversations with judges and legal professionals were both insightful and energizing, which serve as a reminder of the importance of these dialogues for our justice system’s future.” Gabriella, SCOCA Editor, added, “It was inspiring to witness the exchange of innovative ideas and perspectives among so many dedicated professionals, sparking conversations that will undoubtedly shape our justice system moving forward.”

Everyone enjoyed drinks, bites, and the chance to network and build professional connections ahead of on-campus interviews. The second Student Note in Volume 75 Issue 2 is "I Spy with My Many Eyes: The Government’s Unbridled Use of Your Surveillance Cameras" by Brian Weikel, Executive Notes Editor of UC Law Journal. This Note reviews the 2022 San Francisco ordinance through the mosaic theory, whose proponents champion as a necessary correction to the erosion of Fourth Amendment rights and whose opponents condemn as doctrinally flawed and impractical to administer. The Note recommends that the ordinance be modified to safeguard an individual’s reasonable expectation of privacy by adding a notice requirement with camera stickers and adjacent signs, requiring police officers to provide camera owners with a brief descriptive justification for each requested video, and limiting the duration of access to live and historical feeds for each event.
