A December Charity Evening in Kyiv raised over $800K for UCU! This is now the 17th year that UCU has held this event, and the generous contributions from supporters surpassed last year's total. Over 200 people attended the evening event in support of UCU, which included music and several distinguished speakers, including keynote speaker Vasilisa Stepanenko, a journalist, winner of the Pulitzer and Shevchenko prizes, and producer of the Oscar-winning documentary film “20 Days in Mariupol." Oksen Lisovyi, Ukraine’s Minister of Education and Science, also attended the event and declared, "For me, UCU is an inspiring example of what is possible ... Take action, build something new, based on values inherent to the Ukrainian nation." Volodymyr Turchynovskyy, Dean of the Social Sciences Faculty at Ukrainian Catholic University, gave a fireside chat on "The Resilience of a University and its People." The chat was co-hosted by The Lucy Family Institute for Data & Society and the Nanovic Institute for European Studies at the University of Notre Dame. Roman Ponos, a long-time supporter of UCU and an international development consultant, recently visited Ukraine and UCU and met with Dmytro Sherengovsky, Vice-Rector for Outreach and Social Engagement; Natalia Klymovska, Vice-Rector for Development and Communications; Nadiya Berezyuk (Lytvyn); and Andriy Khimyak, from UCU's Development team. Toward the end of 2024, UCU Rector Taras Dobko awarded stipends to professors and thanked them for fruitful cooperation, devoted service, and contribution to resilience and future victory. Iryna Ivanchyk, co-founder of the charitable foundation Believe in Yourself and UCU senator, emphasized: "UCU’s professors sow goodness and the eternal in students’ souls. Artificial intelligence can learn how to provide information, and it will be able to do very much work for us. But it will not be able to give you faith in yourself, love, and hope. So we take care of our professors so that they will share these with their students.” Also at the event, the first scholarships from the fallen heroes' endowment funds were given out to deserving students. UCU Professor and historian Yaroslav Hrytsak recently received the J. Tischner Prize for his book, "Ukraine, To Break Free From the Past." 💡UCU Alumni Spotlight: Artem Romanyukov, Directorate of Digital Transformation of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine Artem Romanyukov, a graduate of the UCU Master’s Program in Public Administration, is a civic activist, businessman-innovator, and co-founder of Mriya Production and the ecological initiative SaveEcoBot. At the start of the full-scale war, he joined the Defense Forces of Ukraine and was company commander in the 15th separate artillery reconnaissance brigade Black Forest of the Land Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He took part in introducing the mobile app Rezerv+ and says the next large-scale task is introducing an app for soldiers, Army+. 💭 “We have a strong team in the IT sector of the Ministry of Defense, great, motivated people, many of whom fought in the war and understand well what’s needed. Ukrainian musicians Daria Maksymova and Andrii Koshman presented a free concert last month at Our Lady of Refuge in Flatbush, Queens, to promote Ukrainian culture and raise awareness of the plight of the soldiers wounded in the war. Maksymova and Koshman are currently living in New York and taking part in an internship program at the Metropolitan Opera that was created for Ukrainian artists in 2023. They plan to return home in mid-December.
