The UARC for the Human Domain -- providing sociotechnical solutions for hard security and intelligence challenges.
About us
The Applied Research Laboratory for Intelligence and Security (ARLIS), based at the University of Maryland College Park, was established in 2018 as a long-term strategic asset for research and development in artificial intelligence, information engineering, and human systems. One of only 14 designated Department of Defense University Affiliated Research Centers (UARCs) in the nation, ARLIS conducts both classified and unclassified applied research and works to serve the US Government and its defense security and intelligence communities as an independent and objective trusted agent. Critical to generating robust analysis and trusted tools in the human domain is the ability to pull together true multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary teams, grounded both in the technical state of the art and a direct understanding of the complex challenges faced by the defense security and intelligence enterprise. Our renowned research team includes engineers, psychologists, computer scientists, anthropologists, cognitive scientists, political scientists, and linguists, working together with former defense operators and policy makers.

The Information Competition Simulator (ICS) is a cutting-edge training tool designed by ARLIS researchers to address the growing threat of information warfare. By integrating social science research, ICS simulates human behavior and reactions to stimuli — integrating biases, interests, and cultural identities—within large populations. It enables realistic training for both offensive and defensive operations in the information environment. Check out our new video on the Information Competition Simulator:
