Today the Triangle Tweener Fund (www.tweenerfund.com) announced our Q3 2024 new portfolio and investing activity. As a reminder, we are a rolling fund (always open to new investors) for accredited investors that want to build a highly diversified 'index' of Triangle startups. What we're most excited to announce is that this experiment that started in 2022 has now crossed over $8m invested in over 120 Triangle HQ'd startups - we want to thank all our ~180 investors (LPs) for making this experiment a huge success. Highlights from Q3: o Invested $778k in 19 deals, 11 new, 8 supporting existing companies o $41k avg investment, $4.8m average round size, $13.4m average pre-money valuation o 7 SAFEs, 4 Converts, 8 Priced rounds Finally, while existing investments are seeing good traction with 'fresh/up rounds', we're seeing an influx of interesting new startups that are 'AI First' or 'AI Native' with very interesting solutions featuring a founder with deep domain knowledge of an acute problem that AI can uniquely solve, access to proprietary data and ability to leverage modern AI LLM+RAG type solutions against these problems. 🚨The Lancet Commission just released it's latest review of research and concluded *almost half of dementia cases could be prevented or delayed.* Brief synopsis: Vision loss and high cholesterol were added as dementia risk factors, in addition to 12 identified previously- less education, head injury, physical inactivity, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, hypertension, obesity, diabetes, hearing loss, depression, infrequent social contact, and air pollution. Effective prevention requires addressing risk factors early and continuously throughout life, with a focus on equity to ensure high-risk groups are included. Interventions should be multicomponent, targeting several risk factors simultaneously, and are beneficial regardless of an individual’s APOE genetic status. Recommended policy actions: Education: Provide quality education for all, encourage cognitive activities in midlife. Hearing: Make hearing aids accessible and reduce harmful noise exposure. Depression: Treat depression effectively. Head Protection: Promote the use of helmets in sports and cycling. Exercise: Encourage regular participation in physical activities. Smoking: Reduce smoking through education, price control, public bans, and accessible cessation advice. Hypertension: Prevent and control hypertension, maintaining systolic blood pressure at 130 mm Hg or less from age 40. Cholesterol: Detect and treat high LDL cholesterol from midlife. Weight Management: Maintain a healthy weight and address obesity early to prevent diabetes. Alcohol: Control high alcohol consumption through pricing and awareness campaigns. Social Interaction: Promote age-friendly environments, reduce social isolation, and facilitate social activities. Vision: Ensure accessible screening and treatment for vision loss. Air Pollution: Reduce exposure to air pollution. Considerations for people with dementia: post-diagnosis interventions can help people live well with dementia, involving future planning, support for family carers, and management of symptoms. Multicomponent interventions and activity programs are crucial for maintaining enjoyment and purpose. Cholinesterase inhibitors and memantine should be provided for Alzheimer's and Lewy body dementia, offering modest cognitive benefits with few side effects. New treatments, such as amyloid-β-targeting antibodies, show promise but come with significant side effects and costs, necessitating careful monitoring and broad information dissemination about their long-term effects and efficacy. Biomarkers for Alzheimer's should be used only to confirm or exclude diagnoses in dementia cases, with current validation limited to largely White populations, raising equity concerns. People with dementia are vulnerable to physical health declines, especially during hospital admissions. Ensuring adequate nutrition, hydration, and medication adherence is essential.
