Introducing the Adaptive Sports & Inclusive Recreation Initiative (ASIRI) Video Series! https://lnkd.in/gmamGFiu The mission of ASIRI is to increase awareness, knowledge, access, and participation in adaptive sports among students and teachers in the K to 12 education system. Our goal is to demonstrate that adaptive sports, like goalball, sitting volleyball, wheelchair basketball, and wheelchair tennis, meet the state guidelines for general physical education. Adaptive sports being integrated in the physical education curriculum ensures that no student is left relegated to the sidelines. Adaptive sports are for everyone, if you can sit, you can play! This series of videos feature the four core sports of ASIRI: Goalball, Sitting Volleyball, Wheelchair Basketball and Wheelchair Tennis. They are designed for teachers, parents, kids, and those interested in learning about the basics of adaptive sports. Our goal with this project is to have a video resource that people can use to support their participation in these sports. This project was made possible by grant funding from Michigan Medicine Community Health Services. Their grant funding is allowing us to expand ASIRI to all middle school grades in Ann Arbor Public Schools and beyond as we continue to expand to Ypsilanti. Great thanks and recognition go to Feranmi Okanlami MD MS, Christopher Kelley, Kristin Stoops, the Ann Arbor Public Schools Middle School PE Lead, the Disability Network of Washtenaw, Livingston, and Monroe, and the many other partners that supported the inception and launch of ASIRI several years ago. It's hard to believe that we are now in YEAR FOUR of the initiative! Very specifically, recognition must go towards the ASIRI team that conceptualized and brought this project to life: Brian Elliott and Erika Barker. Due to their work we have been able to expand, measure, and validate the impact that we are having amongst teachers and students. They work year round to ensure that we are being responsive and adaptive to the needs of the community and our partners. Brian and Erika played crucial roles in bringing this project together. We hope that as we continue to grow ASIRI we can have state and national level change with this initiative so that the K-12 education system is inclusive of adaptive sport as part of the physical education curriculum. U.S. Department of State. This is another significant advancement made in the field of adaptive sports that is a result of partnership and collaboration between institution and the community, leveraging the expertise of partners, and valuing the cooperative process to bring about societal change.
