🌟 Day Three: Exploration of Hess Corporation Well Pad 🌟 Our third day on the field trip took us to a Hess Corporation well pad, where we delved into the intricacies of the oil production process and witnessed a drilling rig in operation. This visit provided us with a wealth of knowledge and hands-on experiences. Key Learnings: 🔹 Drilling Process: We learned about the various drilling bits and motors used, as well as the production of drilling mud. Understanding its role in wellbore pressure control, rock stabilization, and friction reduction was truly enlightening. 🔹 Artificial Lift Systems: After wells lose their natural pressure, artificial lift systems such as ESP (Electric Submersible Pumps) and Rod Pumps are employed. We saw these systems on-site and learned about their operation. 🔹 Crude Production: We gained insights into how each well produces crude oil and the separation process, which usually involves separating water, oil, and gas. 🔹 Gas Flaring Reduction: One of the highlights was learning about Hess Corporation's efforts to reduce gas flaring. Impressively, they capture up to 98% of the gas produced in the process. This experience was incredibly insightful, deepening our understanding of oil production and the technologies involved. We are immensely grateful to Kelly Nissen and General Manager Brent Lohnes for arranging this tour, as well as the on-site crew for their hospitality and expertise. Stay tuned as we continue to share more highlights from our field trip throughout the week! 🛢️🚜🔋 #EnergyEngineering #OilProduction #FieldTrip #AEEUND #SustainableFuture #StudentLife #CleanEnergy #HessCorporation #ArtificialLift #Drilling Association of Energy Engineers , UND College of Engineering and Mines Energy Studies , UND College of Engineering & Mines , Brian Tande , Dr. Richard A. 🌟 Day Two: Exploring the Garrison Dam and Marathon Petroleum Mandan Refinery 🌟 Our second day on the field trip was packed with incredible learning experiences as we visited two locations. 📍First Stop: Garrison Dam, Coleharbor ND The Garrison Dam is truly an engineering spectacle and stands as the 5th largest earthen dam structure in the United States. Equipped with five Francis-turbine generator units operating at 90rpm, the dam boasts a total capacity of over 583 MW, supplying peaking power to the grid. The facility also features black start capabilities, and grid management functions such as load balancing and frequency/voltage control. Senior Project Engineer, L. (Hellebush) Wimer, PMP gave the AEE a tour of the Dam facility, showing us each of the generator units in operation, intake structure, and surge tanks Key takeaways from our visit: 🔹 Multiple functions: In addition to providing hydroelectric power, the dam also helps reduce the risk of downstream flooding along the Missouri and Mississippi rivers. The Dam operation effectively balances hydropower generation, water supply, water quality, irrigation, fish and wildlife conservation, etc. 🔹 Cybersecurity: We discussed the critical importance of robust cybersecurity measures to protect plant control and operations. 🔹 US Army Corps of Engineers Efforts: We learned about the efforts in forecasting and streamflow prediction to ensure efficient plant operations and environmental considerations. 📍Second Stop: Marathon Petroleum Mandan Refinery Operational since 1954, the Marathon Petroleum Mandan Refinery has a crude oil refining capacity of 71,000 barrels per day. Economics and Planning Engineer Cole Bachmeier, P.E. guided us through the plant, showcasing everything from safety equipment and stations to the tank farm and the intricate network of pipelines. Key highlights from the refinery visit: 🔹 Refining Process: The plant primarily refines sweet crude from the North Dakota Bakken, producing gasoline, propane, diesel, and more. Refined products are distributed via trucks and rail. 🔹 Onsite Power Generation: The plant operates gas-fired turbines to power the refining process, reducing grid demand and highlighting natural gas as a transition fuel with a lower carbon footprint. Day two was an eye-opening experience, providing us with a deeper understanding of both hydroelectric power generation and the oil refining processes. We are grateful for the hospitality and insights shared by the US Army Corps of Engineers and Marathon Petroleum Corporation. Stay tuned as we continue to share more highlights from our field trip throughout the week! 🌊🛢️🔋 Association of Energy Engineers , UND College of Engineering and Mines Energy Studies , UND College of Engineering & Mines , Dr. Richard A. 🌟 A Week-Long Exploration of North Dakota's Energy Facilities 🌟 Last week, the AEE UND Student Chapter embarked on an exciting field trip to various energy facilities across North Dakota. We are thrilled to share highlights of our trip throughout this week! Day One: Visit to Oliver 3 Wind Farm Our journey began with a visit to the impressive Oliver 3 Wind Farm, a 99.3MW facility owned and operated by NextEra Energy Resources in Oliver & Mercer Counties. This wind farm plays a crucial role in supplying clean, renewable electricity to areas in North Dakota and Minnesota. We had the privilege of speaking with site manager Martin Hernandez and several wind turbine technicians, gaining valuable insights into the operations and challenges of the wind industry. Here are some key takeaways from our visit: 🔹 Operational Challenges: We learned about the major issues facing the industry, including the premature failure of generator gearboxes usually costing anywhere from $250,000 - $600,000 to replace, multiple instances of curtailment due to low demand or insufficient transmission capacity, and reduced generation during winter months due to icing of the turbine blades. 🔹 Real-World Learning: It was incredible to see our classroom knowledge come to life and engage in meaningful discussions with experienced operators. This hands-on experience has deepened our understanding of wind energy systems. We extend our heartfelt thanks to NextEra Energy, Inc. and Minnkota Power Cooperative for making this visit possible. Your support and hospitality made our first day an unforgettable learning experience! Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to explore and share our experiences from this enriching field trip. 🌬️💡🔋 Brian Tande , Olusegun S. Tomomewo, R. Eng., PhD, MBA, PMP, CPAB , Dr. Richard A.
