The impact of medical debt reaches beyond patients to affect healthcare providers' ability to deliver care. Our upcoming research, supported by the RWJF (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation), explores how clinicians navigate patient conversations about medical debt and how financial concerns influence treatment decisions. We're developing tools to help healthcare workers champion affordable care both in their practice and public spaces. Breaking the Cycle of Medical Debt: A Success Story We're proud to share the impact of our medical debt relief program through the story of Antoinette, a dedicated worker from New Jersey. For over 25 years, she worked without health benefits while being the primary caregiver for her ailing mother. "Living off minimum wage, taking care of my mother, paying rent and bills—it was impossible to pay hospital bills. Even with expensive health insurance, high co-pays make it difficult for many American families to afford care." Through our work, we've successfully abolished $5,244.00 of Antoinette's medical debt, providing much-needed relief to a hardworking American caught in our healthcare system's gaps. "Thank you for relieving me of this burden. I felt great joy, for once, finally receiving some good news in the mail!" Stories like Antoinette's highlight the ongoing challenges in healthcare accessibility and affordability. We remain committed to addressing this crucial issue affecting millions of Americans.

🇺🇸 Honoring Veterans Through Action On Veterans Day, we reflect on an uncomfortable truth: Those who served our nation are 25% more likely to carry medical debt than civilians. Despite VA coverage, many veterans face crushing bills from emergency care, non-VA providers, or treatment received before their benefits began. At Undue, we've abolished millions in veterans' medical debt. But this is about more than numbers—it's about acknowledging that those who sacrificed for our freedom shouldn't sacrifice their financial security for healthcare. Every veteran deserves healthcare without fear of financial ruin. To our veterans: Thank you for your service. You stood up for us—now we stand up for you.

🏛️ Moving the Needle on Medical Debt Policy Reform We're honored to share that Undue Medical Debt recently participated in a significant White House event focused on addressing the medical debt crisis in America. Three members of our team, alongside Amber, one of our debt relief recipients from Ohio, engaged in crucial discussions with Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) Director Rohit Chopra. Amber's testimony was particularly moving: "I chose to attend and share my personal journey due to the stigma that still surrounds medical debt in our society. We live in a country full of both opportunities for success and consequences for life's surprise events, such as health issues." Her powerful message resonates with millions: "If you have medical debt, you are not alone!" Our impact since inception: 📊 $14 Billion in medical debt erased 👥 9 Million individuals relieved of medical debt burden 🌎 Nationwide reach and growing While these metrics are significant, they represent more than numbers – they represent families freed from financial burden, improved mental health outcomes, and restored dignity for millions of Americans. Through continued collaboration with policymakers, healthcare providers, and community organizations, we're working toward systemic change. We're proud of our team's ongoing efforts in Michigan! Our VP of Public Policy, Eva Marie Stahl along with colleagues Gregory Brodie and Susannah Vickers, recently addressed the Flint City Council about the transformative power of medical debt relief. At Undue Medical Debt, we're committed to being a force for systemic change in healthcare financing. Our work throughout Michigan is part of our broader mission to end medical debt and create a more just healthcare system where all people can seek care without fear of financial ruin. Every day, we're working to abolish medical debt for those in financial hardship. Our unique model means that on average, every $1 donated erases $100 of medical debt. We're not just providing relief; we're advocating for structural changes to prevent medical debt from burdening families in the first place. We look forward to continuing our work in Michigan and across the nation, freeing people from the undue burden of medical bills they can't afford.
