About us
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is a global organisation dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights and building a better future for people forced to flee their homes because of conflict and persecution. We lead international action to protect refugees, forcibly displaced communities and stateless people. We deliver life-saving assistance, help safeguard fundamental human rights, and develop solutions that ensure people have a safe place called home where they can build a better future. We also work to ensure that stateless people are granted a nationality. We work in over 130 countries, using our expertise to protect and care for millions. UNHCR’s greatest asset is our workforce. We work with passionate, talented and creative individuals who want to use their skills for good. Thanks to people like you, we can develop solutions that enable people who have been forced to flee to restart their lives and build better futures. Here’s a moving message of gratitude and dedication to inspire you for the new year ✨ Annasophia Heintze, Associate Protection Officer at UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, shares a meaningful moment from her recent journey between Mozambique and Geneva, highlighting the hard work and dedication of those striving to create a more compassionate world. #HumanitariansAtWork
I am writing this as I am traveling from Mozambique to Geneva, to finally be back with my man and babies that I can’t deny I missed so much. Sharing a humbling moment I just had. While buying a little souvenir for my mum, the person at the airport counter paused, puzzled by my passport, and asked: “What passport is that?” I replied, “United Nations.” He seemed unsure, so I elaborated, “United Nations—no country… or actually, all countries.” Correcting myself reminded me of the immense honour of serving with the UN. It’s a privilege to work for an organisation that strives for peace and helping those in greatest needs, transcending borders, in these times where conflict and turmoil hits so many countries and populations so deeply. This feels particularly poignant as I reflect on Mozambique—a country often left out by global news, while facing massive challenges, from displacement and political instability to the devastating effects of natural disasters. It is easy to criticise large bureaucracies, and I agree, greater effectiveness is always something to strive towards. But I stand without hesitation behind the UN—an organisation working tirelessly to address these global challenges. Grateful and humbled to contribute to this mission.

Warmth. Safety. Dignity. With many homes damaged or destroyed in the conflict, many displaced and retuning Syrian families are in desperate need of shelter support, especially during the winter months. In Barneh village in rural Aleppo, we are supporting families like Abd Alhameed’s to have secure and rehabilitated homes. 🔗 https://unh.cr/65eb1bb40

450,000 lives devastated. Families in Mozambique are struggling to survive after Tropical Cyclone Chido destroyed their homes and belongings. UNHCR is on the ground delivering aid, but much more is needed. Together, we can help them rebuild. Act now. https://bit.ly/3PjNZEQ

Step into a world of art, identity and belonging. ✨ FACE to FACE: 50 Encounters with Strangers is more than an exhibition—it’s a journey into the power of human connection. Through her groundbreaking work, Es Devlin introduces the stories of 50 people who fled their countries and now call London home. Their portraits, created with chalk and charcoal, are co-authored with the people behind the art. “In the back and forth between artist and co-author, the act of portrait-making became an exercise in mutual giving and mutual openness," says Devlin. The portraits of people from 25 countries include Maya Ghazal, a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador who arrived in Britain from Syria at 16, building her life again "from zero" and training to be a licensed commercial pilot, and JJ Bola, who left DR Congo with his family at 7 "with the clothes on our backs", and is now a poet, mental health social worker and UNHCR supporter.
