Thorlabs zu Gast bei UNITE an der Physikalisch-Technischen Bundesanstalt Am Mittwoch hatten wir mit UNITE die Gelegenheit, an der Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt, PTB in Berlin-Charlottenburg unser Netzwerk und insbesondere die geplanten Aktivitäten der Domain Quantum vorzustellen. Gemeinsam mit dem Leap Berlin und dem Berliner Transferzentrum für Quantentechnologien (BT-Q) der PTB haben wir Thorlabs einen Einblick in unsere Vorhaben gegeben. Ein besonderer Dank geht an AQLS.EU, ein bereits im BT-Q angesiedeltes Startup, das eindrucksvoll die Vorteile des engen Austauschs mit der PTB für DeepTech-Gründungen aufgezeigt hat. Die Nähe zur Spitzenforschung, der direkte Know-how-Transfer und der Zugang zu hochpräzisen Messtechnologien bieten DeepTech-Startups ideale Voraussetzungen, um Innovationen in der Quantentechnologie erfolgreich zu entwickeln und zu skalieren. Europa soll in Sachen Künstliche Intelligenz mit USA und China mithalten können. Vergangene Woche wurden auf dem AI Action Summit beschlossen, mehrere Milliarden Euro in europäische KI-Projekte zu investieren. Aber in welchen Bereichen liegen Chancen und Potenziale für europäische KI-Startups? Darüber haben wir mit Laura Möller gesprochen. Sie ist Direktorin am Entrepreneurship-Zentrum K.I.E.Z. in Berlin. 🤖🎬 AI Action Summit 2025 🤖🎬 The Paris AI Action Summit brought together global leaders, tech giants and visionaries to chart the future of AI. And we're just getting started, as Nabiha Syed of the Mozilla Foundation put it: "We're currently in the 'computers are the size of a room' phase of AI". And according to scaling law discussions, the rooms are about to get even bigger for now. Here’s some food for thought out of the many discussions:  1. Foundations vs. Scale - Universities lay the groundwork: Academic research remains the bedrock of AI breakthroughs, but private-sector commercialization accelerates impact. An amazing opportunity also for our K.I.E.Z. Künstliche Intelligenz Entrepreneurship Zentrum startups.  - Socializing investments and risks, privatizing benefits: Education and early R&D often rely on public funding - especially in Europe, but rewards flow disproportionately to a small number of US-based corporations. - Consequently, Emmanuel Macron described the G7’s role as “powering, adopting, and sharing AI” to bridge the “have-yachts vs. have-nots” divide as crucial (rather a 'G6' agenda?). 2. Open Source: The Great Equalizer - All agree that access and open-source models enable participation from universities, NGOs, and startups. - Nuanced governance: But open-source isn’t a binary “good vs. bad” debate. It’s about democratizing access while mitigating misuse. - This is especially important as the next frontier lies in the depth of datasets rather than breadth to power AI tools that deliver value for people instead of creating value through users. 3. Governments: From Bystanders to Catalysts - EU’s dilemma: The EU AI Act risks stifling innovation with red tape. France’s pivot to signal a shift toward “innovate first, regulate later” is a well-played hand. For now the Steve Jobs-like “Reality Distortion Field” created by Macron is well intact as Larissa Holzki pointed out.  - Also distorted: Software is really hard to regulate. The AI Act is no seatbelt. You literally can't see that nobody is flying through the windshield thanks to AI regulation. Physical tech is easier to regulate than intangible algorithms. So it's a narrow Goldilocks zone to hit.  - In that zone also lays an opportunity for governments to regain lost trust of citizens. 4. Either 42 is code for 'education' or the answer is not 42: Educating and by that preparing citizens for the AI world ahead is imperative and according to many of the experts on and off stage the answer to making AI a tool for good. In this sense, Europe and Germany in particular need a clear strategy and courage for the future to steer the billions of investments announced wisely. Currently, we have all crucial ingredients, but we don't know what we're serving, and have too many chefs. Einmal mehr zeigt sich Berlin als Hotspot für Spitzenforschung in KI! Am 02. Februar hat OpenAI sein KI-Agenten für die Forschung #Deepresearch gelauncht. Bereits fünf Tage danach war Sam Altman nach Berlin gekommen, um eine langfristige Forschungskooperation zwischen OpenAI und dem BIFOLD anzukündigen. Ziel ist es, bahnbrechende wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse zu gewinnen – von effizienteren Algorithmen über Explainable AI bis hin zu sicheren und robusten KI-Technologien. Begleitet wurde die Ankündigung mit der Podiumsdiskussion „The Age of AI“ an der TU Berlin und es zeigte sich einmal mehr: Berlin ist die erste Adresse für wegweisende KI-Forschung. Mit hochkarätigen Speaker:innen wie Sam Altman (OpenAI), Nicole Büttner (Merantix), Prof. Dr. Fatma Deniz (Technische Universität Berlin) und Prof. Dr. Volker Markl (BIFOLD - Berlin Institute for the Foundations of Learning and Data) wurden zentrale Themen wie Open Science, Foundation Models und die Zukunft von KI diskutiert.
