Human Development Report Office - United Nations Development Programme
International Affairs
Human Development is about the richness of human life rather than simply the richness of the economy.
About us
The Human Development Report Office (HDRO) works to publish the Human Development Report (HDR), an independent report commissioned by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The mission of the Human Development Report Office (HDRO) is to advance human development. The goal is to contribute towards the expansion of opportunities, choice and freedom. The office works towards this goal by promoting innovative new ideas, advocating practical policy changes, and constructively challenging policies and approaches that constrain human development. The office works with others to achieve change through writing and research, data analysis and presentation, support to national and regional analysis and outreach and advocacy work. The HDRO also works on the Human Development Index (HDI), which is a summary measure of average achievement in key dimensions of human development: a long and healthy life, being knowledgeable and have a decent standard of living.

Happy to be back at the African Economic Conference, held this year in late November in Gaborone, Botswana. Co-organized by UNDP Africa, African Development Bank Group and United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, it allowed us to present our on-going exploration on how #AI can enhance human development, as we continue our journey towards the 2025 Human Development Report. Many thanks to the discussants, including Natalie Paida Jabangwe, MBA DIC, Alain Ndayishimiye, and Audrin Mathe.

Grateful to Gary Gillespie, Pedro Conceição, Katherine Trebeck, Francois Bourguignon for joining me on the last stage of the 7th #OECD World Forum on Well-Being. Thank you for your insights on how to sustain the Beyond GDP momentum, and to make our collective efforts more meaningful and powerful. Four key areas especially call for important attention: 🔄 In economy, we must shift our economic policies and strategies towards ‘triple-win’ solutions that benefit people, the planet, and prosperity, placing equity and sufficiency at the core. 📊 In data, it’s time to innovate and open our data collection and communication processes to ensure information is more timely, granular, and meaningful for people. 🌍 In climate action, let’s turn the climate crisis into an opportunity for impactful change, aiming for the breadth, urgency, and fairness needed for a true green transition. 🤖 In AI, we need swift action to harness AI’s potential responsibly for human well-being, while ensuring it doesn’t deepen inequalities or introduce new risks. 💡 Well-being begins now, and only through unified efforts we can harness our collective potential to make a meaningful impact, enhancing well-being for everyone today and for generations to come. #sustainability #AI #Climateaction #Data #triplewin #wellbeing #OECDForumWellBeingRome2024

“We face interconnected issues that compound or affect traditional #violence and #conflict,” says James Chabin. To him, "#HumanSecurity means reimagining what security is for human beings,” with future policies adopting a multidimensional approach that puts humans at the center. 🤝

"Who develops technology, how, and with what data?" 🤷♀️ Luísa Franco Machado asks these questions to highlight how #insecurity stems from #uncertainty. She stresses the need for more #transparency, #opensystems, and #regulations focused on #HumanSecurity. 🌐🔒 What else should we consider?
