A mind is a terrible thing to waste, but a wonderful thing to invest in.
About us
UNCF (United Negro College Fund) is the nation’s largest and most effective minority education organization. During its 80-year existence, UNCF has raised more than $6 billion and helped more than 500,000 students not just attend college, but thrive, graduate and become leaders. To serve youth, the community and the nation, UNCF supports students’ education and development through scholarships and other programs, supports and strengthens its 37 member colleges and universities, and advocates for the importance of minority education and college readiness. While totaling only 3% of all colleges and universities, UNCF institutions and other historically Black colleges and universities are highly effective, awarding 15% of bachelor’s degrees, 5% of master’s degrees, 10% of doctoral degrees and 19% of all STEM degrees earned by Black students in higher education. UNCF administers more than 400 programs, including scholarship, internship and fellowship, mentoring, summer enrichment, and curriculum and faculty development programs. Today, UNCF supports more than 50,000 students at over 1,100 colleges and universities across the country. Its logo features the UNCF torch of leadership in education and its widely recognized trademark, ‟A mind is a terrible thing to waste.”® Learn more at UNCF.org or for continuous updates and news, follow UNCF on Instagram at @UNCF.

As we kick off #BlackHistoryMonth, UNCF is proud to announce that Coco Gauff is now one of the youngest major gift donors in UNCF’s history. She continues to make history on the court and off the court! Her $100,000 donation to UNCF will significantly impact the lives of HBCU students aspiring to excel in competitive tennis. Coco supports HBCUs because she recognizes the value of supporting tennis programs at these institutions and the role they play in the community. Several members of Gauff’s family have attended or currently attend HBCUs. Thank you, Coco for uplifting HBCU athletes and leading the way for the next generation of philanthropist! Honoring Black History Month, UNCF celebrates the enduring legacy of HBCUs in shaping Black excellence—from UNCF’s founders, Frederick D. Patterson and Mary McLeod Bethune, to today’s leaders in business, science, film, activism and more. HBCUs have been foundational in equipping generations of African Americans to lead and excel across all facets of society—whether in skilled trades, professions, activism or entrepreneurship. These institutions reflect the resilience, ingenuity and transformative power of Black labor in driving progress and building a more equitable future. As we reflect on this legacy, we must commit to sustaining and strengthening HBCUs to ensure their impact endures for generations to come. #UNCF #BlackHistoryMonth #HBCUExcellence

Today, UNCF pauses to reflect on the life and legacy of the legendary civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. King’s contributions emphasizing the importance of education and equity for a just society have always been consistent with the mission and values of UNCF. MLK Day serves as a powerful reminder of Dr. King’s enduring legacy and the profound impact he had on the civil rights movement. It is a time for reflection, inspiration and a call to action, and UNCF is encouraging everyone to contribute to the ongoing struggle for justice and opportunity in our society. UNCF reposted this
I found this photo, which brings back fond memories of meeting President Jimmy Carter. As the world reflects on his remarkable legacy, let us honor his contributions by continuing to champion the importance of HBCUs and their critical role in building a more equitable, inclusive, and progressive society. I join with many others in mourning the passing of our nation’s 39th President. He was a true advocate for higher education and a steadfast supporter of historically Black colleges and universities. May we carry his vision forward and ensure his impact is never forgotten. https://lnkd.in/eFr6_q6y
