🌍 Rangers are essential on the frontline of conservation, yet often face tough conditions with limited pay, equipment, training, and recognition. Our latest publication explores how these working conditions impact their vulnerability to corruption. This research underscores the need for improved support and targeted anti-corruption strategies to strengthen rangers’ resilience. https://lnkd.in/gJT8Zfek International Ranger Federation World Wildlife Fund Universal Ranger Support Alliance Hamera Aisha Héloïse Lebon

With the rising impacts of #ClimateChange across the world, it is crucial that the United Nations Climate Conference delivers concrete and accelerated progress across all the pillars of the Paris Agreement, particularly finance. Finance remains central to the achievement of all #climate goals. There is an urgent need for funding that addresses the scale of the challenge, covers the entire spectrum of mitigation, adaptation and loss and damage, and fully takes into account the needs and priorities of developing country Parties, particularly of vulnerable communities and ecosystems. The IRF's mission is to advance the Ranger profession and its critical role in conservation of natural and cultural resources.
HIGHLIGHTS: #COP16Colombia “Rangers matter. There is no GBF without rangers. We need to change our thinking and give rangers the rights and responsibilities as other members of the civil service. We need to stop talking about money for rangers, this won’t be fixed by grants. Rangers need to be part of public budgets. Rangers matter for the Global Biodiversity Framework, but also because they are people who risk their lives. We will raise our voice with IRF until rangers take their place as leaders of this movement” (@Valery Hickey, Global Director of Environment, Natural Resources and Blue Economy - The World Bank) “Rangers deserve more, they fill diverse roles. Current salary levels for rangers are inadequate, we need to change in terms of acknowledgement and recognition” (Kathleen Fitzgerald - Project Director, Enduring Earth) “We don’t do enough for rangers. We need to also listen to them” (Onno van den Heuvel - Global Manager BIOFIN - Biodiversity Finance Initiative) "A productive economy is a combination of capital and labour. We talk about capital, but we need to think of the labour. Rangers need a Framework of working conditions, competences, conduct and accountability in a rights-based framework focused around a diverse, recognized and properly supported workforce” (Mike Appleton – Universal Ranger Support Alliance) “We need the support of communities. Conservation is not just about money, it is about consciousness, feeling empowered to act in your community and ecosystem, we require a larger approach. We need to acknowledge and institutionalize these processes” (@Dr. Purificación Canales – Coordinator of the @Global network of MPA Manager Networks) “Rangers are not only defenders, but bridges to communities. Creating shared commitment to protect nature and resources that protects all. When we invest in rangers we are investing in the health of the entire ecosystem. Our commitment to ranger wellbeing is aligned to GBF targets. By supporting ranger mental health and wellbeing, we are investing in our workforce more effectively, sustainably and safely. (Doucette Kayombo Useni - @Insitut Congolais Pir la Conservation de la Nature) “We need to change the paradigm of rangers. Rangers are responsible for the collective good. We need to appeal for higher standards” (Nik Sekhran – Chief Conservation Officer, WWF) “60% of rangers have no access to clean water. It’s not about pity for rangers. It’s about rangers protecting the places that provide drinking water to millions.” (Rohit Singh – VP, IRF) “We need to invest in the workforce. There is no GBF without rangers. Ranger representation must be included as part of a major group at the CBD to mobilize the conservation workforce we need. We need recognition of rangers and welfare. This is all in the Rangers Message to Cali and CBD Community". (Jonathan Churcher, GM, IRF) Ranger's message to Cali: https://lnkd.in/eiSPHcgp

Massive congratulations to Juan Sanchez, the president of the Colombian Ranger Association, participating in the high level round table at COP16, supported by the High Ambition Coalition focused on Target Three of the KMGBF. The title of this panel is, ‘The recognition of traditional territories and respect of the rights of IP&LCs.’ Juan did a great job in highlighting how working with IPs helps to strengthen protected areas through co-management. He emphasized “common core” “common problems” “allies” and provided legal frameworks detail, which can guide other governments in the room. Partnership is key if we are to reach our shared conservation goals, especially 30x30. #HearingTheVoiceOfRangers #ForRangersByRangers #WeStandWithWorldRangers International Ranger Federation IUCN WWF Wildlife Conservation Society Conservation International PANTHERA Zoological Society of London (ZSL) Force For Nature Fauna & Flora Re:wild

At #COP16Colombia, we are supporting the adoption of a Global Action Plan on Biodiversity and Health. The plan, WCS's Susan Lieberman said today during a panel discussion, finally connects biodiversity conservation with health, and provides a critical tool for work with governments, Indigenous Peoples, and other stakeholders. The conservation and protection of ecological integrity is critical to biodiversity conservation, climate change, and health outcomes; and is recognized clearly in the plan.
