  • DID YOU KNOW? University of Michigan Health-Sparrow is one of the few health systems in the nation to treat cancer patients using the leading-edge ViewRay MRIdian radiation machine? This advanced technology enables our highly skilled radiation oncologists, like Daniel Chapman, M.D., to view live images of the tumor during treatment, allowing for more precise treatments with higher doses of radiation while protecting surrounding healthy tissue and organs. • Beautiful story to start your weekend by our colleagues at University of Michigan Health-West. So glad to see Cindy doing so well!

“They were just so positive... I felt like there wasn't one person that wasn't encouraging me and wanting me to get my best quality of life that I could have.” Cynthia’s journey from surviving two strokes to reclaiming her independence is nothing short of remarkable. Thanks to the expert care and support from UM Health-West and Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital, she defied the odds and embraced a new, fulfilling chapter of life. https://bit.ly/3Wbp761

  • As the nation mourns the loss of former President Jimmy Carter, we spoke with Sandra Pearson, a UM Health-Sparrow board member and former head of Habitat for Humanity in Michigan, who worked alongside President and Mrs. Carter on several projects. Pearson shared reflections about her former colleague and friend. “I was fortunate to meet President Carter for the first time in 2009 in Hanoi during the Carter Work Project, which spanned three locations in Vietnam. Michigan volunteers built two homes that year… and I attended a private dinner with the Vietnamese government officials and the Carters. It was humbling to hear them share how deeply meaningful it was to return to Vietnam after the war and speak about the healing power of volunteering. Teams from Michigan, including Vietnam veterans, participated in annual builds, finding the experience both powerful.” On the build sites, the Carters were known for their humility and commitment. “On a Habitat for Humanity build, they were truly one of us—we ate together, even if we were sweaty and dirty. I was on a build with him where he was hospitalized due to being overheated. He and Rosalynn wanted to set the example for everyone else to follow. The Carters had no tolerance for people who were simply there to meet them. They were there to work and expected everyone else to be working,” Pearson said. “They would cordially call you out if you were loitering and say, 'It's time to get to work.'” You can learn more about this story and the Carters humanitarian work by watching this great feature by WILX-TV: https://bit.ly/3PvBwxY

  • Our clothing drive is down to its final days. Thru Jan. 10, you can drop off donations in any of the two designated donation box locations: UM Health-Sparrow Lansing check-in desk (hospital lobby) or the SPA (Sparrow Professional Building on the 3rd floor). The drive welcomes donations of new clothing items for children and adults of all sizes: sweatpants, sweatshirts, underwear, shoes, coats, hats and gloves/mittens. These donations will help the many patients that arrive at the hospital in urgent situations, underdressed or without appropriate clothing to wear home. This clothing drive aims to fill that gap by ensuring patients leave the hospital warm, safely and with dignity.

  • This story takes valet service to another level! 😀👶🤰🚗 UM Health-Sparrow Lansing public safety officers and emergency department team members recently helped a woman who delivered her baby in the valet drive of the hospital. 34-year-old Meghan Clark of East Lansing was unable to make it inside the hospital in time and delivered her baby, Ruby James, just before 4 a.m. right in front of the hospital. Officers Ashbaugh, Wright, Griffin, and Dible rushed to assist, ensuring both the newborn and her mother were safe. Meghan’s husband, Jacob, wrapped the two in a blanket until emergency department team members arrived and transported them inside for further care. Baby Ruby was born weighing 8 pounds and 6 ounces and was 20 inches long. Both she and her mother are doing well, and the family expressed their gratitude to the UM Health-Sparrow team for their swift and compassionate care.
