East Carolina University leaders broke ground Thursday on a planned seven-story, 195,000-square-foot Center for Medical Education Building financed by the state of North Carolina. When it opens in 2027, the Center for Medical Education Building will provide state-of-the-art classrooms, anatomy labs and simulation technology integrated with flexible spaces, collaboration rooms, small group student spaces and green infrastructure. “There is a shortage of primary care doctors in our country that’s acute for rural Americans. East Carolina University stands in the breach, training today’s medical students who will choose to practice primary care in underserved areas tomorrow,” said Chancellor Rogers. In September, Hurricane Helene brought down more than 5,000 trees at The North Carolina Arboretum, closing the arboretum and leaving trails and roads through 434 acres of the Pisgah National Forest inaccessible. A new collaborative project will repurpose more than 65 truckloads of those fallen and damaged trees to support recovery in western North Carolina. Norma R. Houston, chief of staff to the UNC System Office, said the arboretum would still be closed if not for the Interagency Recovery Coordination (IRC), a team of federal, state and local government, non-profits and faith-based organizations. “This is an example of what amazing things can happen when groups sharing a common mission dedicated to helping people in times of need work together,” she said.
