Microbes living in our guts help us digest food by reshaping the bile acids that our livers produce for breaking down fats. It turns out that two of these microbially-modified bile acids may affect our risk — in opposite directions — for developing #coloncancer. The link between these bile acids and colon cancer risk was recently uncovered as University of Wisconsin-Madison scientists sought to better understand the relationship between gut microbes and our bodies. Article: 'UW researchers find previously unknown links between microbial bile acids and the risk of colon cancer' https://lnkd.in/grJkgE7U via UW–Madison #university #Wisconsin #health #research

The latest episode of “WisBusiness.com: the Podcast” is with Suzanne Fanning, executive vice president and chief #marketing officer for Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin (DFW). The #podcast explores how DFW markets products in #Wisconsin, nationwide and further as exports become an increasingly important piece of the state’s #dairy sector. Fanning discusses how the organization reaches new markets for #cheese in particular, noting “you’d be hard-pressed to find somebody in Wisconsin who doesn’t already know how fabulous our cheese is.” She notes very little is spent in-state on promoting cheese, adding most efforts are focused elsewhere. https://lnkd.in/gmA9ERxa #agriculture #business #leadership

A simplified #cancer screening process and a new way to break down ‘forever chemicals’ have taken top honors from the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF). The first 2024 WARF #Innovation Award has been given to the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Muhammed Murtaza, associate professor of surgery, and surgery researcher Michelle Stephens for their work, Simplifying the Process for Early Detection, Screening of Cancer. Many of today’s most effective cancer detection and screening methods are costly and require that patients travel to a clinic for a blood draw, limiting factors for individuals in low-resourced and rural settings. The team developed a diagnostic that allows for at-home collection of blood samples, making the early screening and detection of cancer easier and more cost effective and improving #healthequity for millions of individuals. The other winning team includes Song Jin, professor of chemistry, and graduate student Katelyn Michael for their work, Inventive Electrochemical Process Breaks Down ‘Forever Chemicals.’ The electrochemical process developed by the team delivers a one-two punch to PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). These molecules, found in everyday products like packaging and nonstick cookware, were once thought impossible to destroy and pose serious environmental and #publichealth challenges. The #technology uses an inventive design to allow two typically incompatible processes for the destruction of PFAS to occur in a single cell, opening the door for electrochemical degradation of PFAS at scale. An independent panel of judges selected the winners from a field of six finalists drawn from hundreds of invention disclosures submitted to WARF over the prior 12 months. The winning teams each receive an award of $10,000, with the funds going to the named UW-Madison inventors. URP was a proud early partner and happy surfer of this innovative wave.
On Monday, we gathered at Exact Sciences in Madison to celebrate a meaningful milestone—the 30th anniversary of our investment in Third Wave Technologies. Third Wave was more than a pioneering biotech company that advanced DNA and RNA analysis to aid disease diagnosis and treatment—it also profoundly shaped Wisconsin’s entrepreneurial ecosystem: · They were the first entrepreneurial spin-out from University of Wisconsin-Madison to receive a license from Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) for equity in lieu of an up-front licensing fee, paving the way for the spinouts that followed. · Their groundbreaking IPO put Madison on the map as a biotech hub, forever changing the perception of our city as a place to work and innovate. · Third Wave's journey fueled the growth of venture capital in Wisconsin, raising unprecedented amounts for the time. · The company’s alumni went on to build the next generation of transformative companies like Exact Sciences and Elephas. The evening featured an inspiring panel discussion moderated by John Neis, with Kevin Conroy, Lloyd Smith, James Dahlberg, Lance Fors, and Maneesh Arora, who shared insights about their journey at Third Wave and the lessons they carried forward. At Venture Investors, we are proud to have supported Third Wave Technologies on their groundbreaking journey and grateful for the lasting impact they’ve had on our community and beyond. Their legacy reminds us of the power of innovation to break barriers, build ecosystems, and transform lives. Here’s to the next 30 years of advancing healthcare innovation and supporting extraordinary entrepreneurs. Thank you to our wonderful colleagues and friends for joining us for a fantastic evening. #HealthCare #Entrepreneurship #VentureCapital #MadisonTech #VentureInvestors
