The University Co-op is a nonprofit supporting student success at The University of Texas at Austin.

About us

The only not-for-profit Longhorn store bringing down the cost of course materials for Longhorn students since 1896! The University Co-op was founded in 1896 by Dr. William J. Battle, a professor of the Greek language who later served as president of The University of Texas at Austin from 1914 to 1916. The original store opened on campus — it was located in the University’s Main Building--with books, stationery and athletic goods, and the intent was to sell its products to students at the lowest possible prices. Twenty-two years later the Co-op moved off campus to a one-story building on Guadalupe across from the Student Union Center and started selling merchandise to local citizens as well. The Co-op remained a co-operative until 1977, when it became a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit educational corporation owned by the students, faculty and staff of The University of Texas at Austin. Through different locations and meeting the ever-changing needs of students and faculty, the Co-op has stayed true to its original idea and mission. The Co-op's commitment to education is evident through its continuing services to the University of Texas at Austin. Every semester, the Co-op manages the Course Material requisition process to ensure that the University is compliant with state and federal law. Each semester, the Co-op services tens of thousands of students, providing helpful guidance to Longhorns from their freshman textbooks to their graduation announcements and cap and gowns.

  • The University Co-op is a 2024 Austin American-Statesman Top Workplaces winner! The Austin America-Statesman Top Workplace Award generally recognizes between 100 and 130 organizations in the Austin area for this award based on talent feedback captured through the Energage Workplace Survey. “Our people are the reason that the Co-op is a wonderful place to work,” said Cheryl Phifer, President and CEO of the University Co-operative Society. “Through their support, feedback, and commitment to our core values and mission, the Co-op continues to improve. We’re so grateful to our team and are committed to an environment where our team can thrive.” The Co-op was established nearly 130 years ago with the goal of addressing the rising cost of course materials for students. Today, the Co-op is still focused on reducing the cost of course materials for students. As a not-for-profit, the Co-op gives all profits back to students through course material scholarships for Longhorns. Nearly 7,000 students received scholarships last academic year and support has expanded to give scholarships to the entire Longhorn band, all student athletes, and the pom and cheer squads. In addition to the not-for-profit mission, the Co-op is committed to their core values of authentic, welcoming, supportive, achievers. These core values are shared, discussed, and celebrated weekly on a company-wide call, in department meetings and in shift chat ins, so all team members can highlight and recognize their peers for embodying these values. “We are incredibly honored to be recognized as a winner for the 2024 Austin American-Statesman Top Workplaces for 2024. This achievement is a testament to the dedication and passion of our entire team, and mindfulness of our peoples’ experience. At the Co-op, we are committed to listening to our peoples’ experiences, and our leaders are committed to action planning,” said Angie Cartwright, VP People & Experience.

Two things I've had on my dream “wish list” for my business for a while: 1. I thought it would be amazing to have my products at the UT Co-Op. 2. I’ve always thought it would be cool to sell my UT Towers outside the stadium during a game day. This week the University Co-Op started selling my products in the store, AND I will be participating in a new game-day shopping experience at this week’s UT football game! Thank you to Olivia Biagi and Craig Westemeier for making this happen. UT fans, stop by and say hi if you are at the game on Saturday! https://lnkd.in/gUW-mxqn
