It was so rewarding to share the IIRS lab’s research along side the amazing work of my co-chair Steve Berkley, PhD in our #NCFR2024 symposium - The Influence of Racial Socialization within Familial and Educational Contexts: An Exploration of Minoritized Identities and Opportunities for Resilience-Building. Thank you also to #UNRCoEHD doc students Chalyss Evans and Turna Mithila who presented their projects! See our symposium abstract below! #PackPride Racial identity exploration has been shown to be beneficial for many psychosocial, academic, and health outcomes. However, many POC and those with other minoritized identities continue to experience identity-based discrimination more so than those with White and other privileged identities. Thus, it stands to reason that a better understanding of racial socialization processes and outcomes is warranted. While many studies tend to revolve around Black familial experiences of racial socialization, the influence of racial socialization within nuanced and diverse familial and educational contexts is less known. Three studies within this symposium aim to explore racial socialization processes for LGBTQ+ POC within familial contexts (using qualitative methods) and for Black students within educational contexts (using quantitative methods). Results highlight challenges around multiple-identity socialization, opportunities for connection, self-reflection, and growth, and the protective nature of racial socialization within academic spaces. Implications regarding future research and practical application will be discussed.

  • Get to know Lucas Pope! He's currently doing his teaching practicum with Mr. Fitzpatrick at McQueen High School, assisting with World Geography and Political Science 101, a University Collegiate Academy dual-credit course. Lucas is part of our PackTeach program and will graduate in Spring 2025 with a dual bachelor's degree in Secondary Education and History! His dream? To become a social studies teacher at the middle or high school level. While Lucas is still deciding between staying in northern Nevada or returning to Las Vegas to teach, he's making the most of his practicum experience here. "I've learned so much from Mr. Fitzpatrick and the other teachers. They've been incredibly welcoming and made this practicum a great experience. I've learned that everything in the classroom should have intent behind it—whether it's the seating chart or how the test is created, it all needs purpose." A huge shoutout to his parents, who are both teachers and have set an amazing example for him to follow. "I've always known I wanted to be a teacher and coach, and now I'm fulfilling that dream." Lucas is grateful for the opportunity and is excited about what's ahead! Go Pack! 💙🐺 #PackTeach #FutureTeacher #UNRCoEHD #PackPride
