The most powerful demos of ed tech tools come directly from the people who use them every day: school leaders, teachers, and students. They bring a genuine perspective, highlighting both the strengths and challenges of these tools, and sharing the “what, why, and how” of their impact in the learning community. That’s why we at Unrulr are overjoyed to co-lead a pop-up demo event on Monday, November 4, from 2-4 pm at the Aurora Institute Symposium, featuring Unrulr legends from Cañon City High School — Principal Bill Summers and CTE Director Madison Tortessi. This two-hour session will celebrate Cañon City’s CTE and work-based learning programs as much as it will showcase how Unrulr supports their students’ work, growth, and skills as a vital portfolio tool. We’re excited to share this story with you! #Aurora24

We're humbled by the schools and leaders we get to collaborate with on a daily basis. Join us on November 5th at 8:30 am, for a workshop we are co-leading with Victoria Andrews of Getting Smart and Cañon City Principal Bill Summers and CTE Director Madison Tortessi at the Aurora Institute Symposium 2024. We may have created the most buzz-words-jumbled workshop title in the history of education conferences (Documenting Moments and Telling the Story of the Journey: Evidence and Learner Empowerment in CTE, Career Pathways, and Competency Based Education) but the session is focussed on how we can create cultures of reflection and documentation in our learning programs from CTE, Work Based Learning, and beyond. The session will be about the power of storytelling and how Cañon City harnesses it to gain a much better picture of their student's growth and skills. You will leave this workshop with a new understanding of student-led documentation and an action plan that is immediately implementable. #Aurora24

Mike Yates, Kwaku Aning, and I need your vote, oh glorious dwellers of Linkedin: https://lnkd.in/dDxDDn2p I fell in love with research in college, in the office of Thomas Hilbink (the single best teacher I've had in formal education). He empowered me to be a researcher, a detective, not just a student. In turn I put him on to some great musicians. I fell in love with Hip-Hop in middle-school in the 90's as it took me back to Stevie Wonder, Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masakela, Fela Kuti, Nina Simone and the sounds of the first seven years of my childhood in Maseru, Lesotho. Take 2 minutes out of your day and vote for our SXSW Edu session "Diggin'InTheCrates: Research Through the Lens of HipHop". Let's shift research from passive to active, from rote to joyful.

“Make the action the goal, not the outcome.” – Alex Hormozi In our latest podcast episode, we had the sheer joy of talking with educator Angela Stockman and her student, Maggie Burns (who is also an intern with us at Unrulr). Angela and Maggie are both interested in shifting from an achievement-based mindset to one focused on learning and documentation. In today’s fast-paced world, many of us are driven by the need to achieve and gain recognition. Completing projects and pleasing others can provide a temporary dopamine hit, but this often leaves us in a constant chase for the next big win. Angela beautifully articulated how noticing and celebrating the small learning moments can bring a more sustainable and fulfilling sense of satisfaction. “When you start realizing and noticing when you’re learning something, the learning starts to feel like the reward. For me, it’s almost like being on a scavenger hunt every day,” Angela shared. By documenting and reflecting on our learning journeys, we shift the focus from the pressure of performance to the joy of continuous growth. This mindset shift can be life-changing, allowing us to embrace the idea that if we are learning, we are never truly failing. Tune in to our podcast to dive deeper into this insightful conversation and discover how you can apply these principles to your own life. What happens when you surprise an education leader with not one, but TWO, of his most important mentors? On our latest podcast with Carlos R. Moreno, we asked Charmaine Mercer Ph.D. and Elliot Washor to hop into the room to share a few words about Carlos and his accomplishments as a leader. Suffice to say, emotions were flowing. 📺 Watch the full episode here: https://lnkd.in/gfvcwB_5 Coming soon to Spotify and Apple Podcasts... Big Picture Learning Kwaku Aning

What makes a great leader? According to Carlos R. Moreno, Co-Executive Director at Big Picture Learning, it's all about embracing love, care, and vulnerability. In the latest episode of the Unrulr Podcast, co-hosted by Kwaku Aning, Carlos shares powerful stories about soulful leadership. One such story was about his first principal, Nancy Diaz, at the Met School in Providence. What Nancy did that set her apart: • She led with humility by admitting she didn't have all the answers and asking for help. How this transformed their team dynamic: • They felt seen, cared for, and supported, which allowed them to do their best work. Check out the full episode to learn more about Carlos's leadership journey and finding your leadership soul. 📺 Watch the full episode: https://lnkd.in/gfvcwB_5 Big Picture Learning Aaron Schorn Brenda Diaz, Ed.D #Leadership #Podcast #Empathy #Vulnerability #Education

If you're disillusioned with assessment like many of us are, here is a tool to check out. I recently discovered Unrulr (thanks Aaron Schorn!) which is purposefully built for students to document growth and showcase the skills and abilities they are building through all kinds of learning experiences. It has a social media feel, all about sharing photos of your process and product, but learners also tag the skills they feel they are demonstrating through that process. It naturally encourages users to see their journey over time, or the diverse ways there are to demonstrate a given construct. This is what assessment should be - not how many answers you got right, but how much you grow and reflect. And it's a great example of the pedagogy we value being really baked into the design of the tool.
