Thanks to my friend Christina Olsen for nominating me to share my #DefiantOriginStory. (a day late for #TBT - yesterday was a busy day!) Many know parts of my story as I share openly in my #keynote talks and even most recently as the opening speaker at #TEDxMiami where I spoke about #HealthyResilience (I look forward to sharing the talk once it’s live on the #TED website in a few weeks). My origin story is my “WHY” - it’s what has fueled me in life. I have long-since been determined to be better than my biology or my circumstances. I was born to a drug-addicted teenage mother who was very abusive to me; thankfully, I was adopted out of the environment at age 4. While I had a safe, loving adoptive family - we were very much in a lower socio-economic position so I began working at age 11 and by age 14 I stepped into my first leadership role as the assistant manager for the shoe store I worked at in high school. Work was a safe place for me, one I excelled at. I felt very much in control - more than outside of work - I was in charge of my performance, the skills I acquired to advance, the hours I worked etc. I had planned to go to law school but I realized that I loved the corporate environment and my role as a leader so I pursued this path. I was recruited into my first executive role at the very young age of 24. I made mistakes, particularly in my early days of executive leadership - I was fearful of showing emotions and vulnerability - I didn’t want anyone to question the queer young female executive. As I grew, I learned the value of, what I refer to, as Whole Human Leadership - being authentic, transparent, and vulnerable amongst other important leadership traits and actions (stay tuned for my book on this topic in the fall). I now openly share my stories - my lived experience, failures, and lessons - to connect, educate, and inspire. I share one of the only pictures I have of me prior to my adoption....from scared toddler to "likeable badass" as I've recently been called! Welcome to May! As I turn the page on what has been a uniquely challenging start to 2024, I'm excited to welcome this month, not just because it's my birthday month, but also for several other joyous reasons. First off, a massive thank you to Johnny Lemoine for his outstanding work on my website's redesign — it’s given a great fresh and modern new look to the digital face of my brand. Our backyard renovation is also complete (well 97%) , and we're set to celebrate in style with a party and great friends! Looking ahead, I'm thrilled to share that I will be giving a TEDx talk on May 15th on Resilience — a theme that resonates deeply given my background as well as the ups and downs of the year so far. Additionally, I'm starting to see some promising developments on the career front, rebounding from the debacle of early March. As they say, "April showers bring May flowers." I am filled with gratitude and anticipation for what I know will be a fantastic month ahead.
