  • 🌌 How we learned that the Milky Way was just one of many “island universes…” Join the @University of Arizona School of Astronomy & Steward Observatory’s Prof. Chris Impey  as he recounts Edwin Hubble’s journey through the cosmos in The Conversation U.S.! 🔭 Years before Hubble’s discoveries, astronomers assumed the entire universe was contained in the Milky Way galaxy. Aided by a framework built over centuries of telescopic innovations and astronomic contributions by many, Hubble found that, indeed, the lonesome Milky Way galaxy was not alone! 👾👾 🛰️ Thanks to Hubble’s contributions, with help from people like Henrietta Swan Leavitt, who calculated the positions and brightness of thousands of stars, astronomers have since realized that the universe is MUCH larger than initially believed. 🔗 Full story at the link below! ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/daHTMdSc

  • 🎉Congratulations to UC’s Dr. Adrienne Brown for her mentorship award!🏆 📚The University of Arizona Research, Innovation & Impact team recognized Dr. Brown for her work and participation in a tiered mentorship system at Lauffer Middle School in the Sunnyside School District!🏫 In this project, led by UC Assistant Research Professor Adriana Zuniga-Teran, local middle schoolers were taught how to participate in STEM research through hands-on activities and lessons.🧮 But rather than getting answers and advice directly from boring adults, information was transferred through a tiered mentoring system! Faculty Investigators 👉 Graduate Student 👉 Undergraduate Student 👉 High-schooler 👉 Middle-schooler ✅The benefits of such a system have proven effective in student engagement and interest in STEM related activities, improved confidence in students’ ability to overcome obstacles, and community building! 🔗Learn more about this project in our 2023 news story – link below!⬇️ https://lnkd.in/gPZjTb4n This project is supported by the voter-approved Technology and Research Initiative Fund (TRIF). The U of A reinvests TRIF funding into projects that will spur research, technological innovation, and workforce development that benefit the people of Arizona. #poweredbytrif

  • 👉 How does this sound? - Increased public participation. - Streamlining the communication process between agencies and citizens. - Getting more people engaged in observing their natural and built environments. - Building trust between agencies and the public. ✅ Well, UC’s Andrea Gerlak et al. have produced a study affirming benefits and recognizing constraints of current Geospatial Online Participation Tool (geo-OPT) implementation! Geo-OPTs help provide agencies with spatially explicit information by public volunteers. 🌍 🧑🔬 Citizen scientists utilizing this tech may communicate with agencies directly, and with each other, sharing and updating data quickly! 🔗 Discover what they uncovered at the link below! ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/gk6Vp4JB
