Counselors with Disabilities providing psychosocial support to Students with Disabilities their families and communities

About us

👉 Kenyan Youth with Disabilities are 55% less likely to enroll in school and 60% more likely to dropout. 👉 Studies show symptoms of depression are up to 10x more common in Youth with Disabilities. 👉 Depression is one of the most common “secondary conditions” associated with being a Person with a Disability. These numbers are escalating rapidly as this population struggles to overcome past and present trauma and the accompanying mental health issues. This mental health crisis, a direct result of isolation, exclusion, and overall stigmatization, shows no sign of abating. Even when given the opportunity for education in special schools, these individuals lack the additional psychosocial support necessary to succeed and graduate at the same pace as their non-disabled peers. Today the long-term career prospects of this group are diminished not due to lack of talent but the burden of discrimination. Upili, a project of Next Step Foundation, endeavors to shift these statistics and mitigate the trauma associated with being a Youth with Disabilities in East Africa through its unique 4-pronged approach: ➡️ Group Counseling Counselors with Disabilities supporting Students with Disabilities to process/navigate past and current traumas. This unique approach facilitates immediate rapport with students as a result of shared lived experience and positively impacts students' and families' perspectives as both groups shift their perception of what careers are possible for Youth with Disabilities. ➡️ Teacher Trainings Educating teachers/staff to serve as Psychological First Responders in support of therapy sessions ➡️ Peer Trainings Coaching select group of students to provide peer support, active/reflective listening and mentoring ➡️ Parent/Caregiver Awareness Educating primary caregivers around disability acceptance and support both at home and in partnership with group counseling sessions

  • At just two years old, Asiya Mohamed faced a life-altering accident resulting in the loss of both legs and several fingers. Asiya refused to let adversity define her. Over the years, she has emerged as a trailblazer in Kenyan sports, an advocate for inclusion, and the very definition of resilience. Asiya’s athletic endeavors began with wheelchair marathons, followed by wheelchair tennis. In 2018, she took on rowing, a sport relatively new to Kenya, and made history as the first Kenyan female rower to compete at the Paralympics in the PR1 single sculls at Tokyo 2020. Her determination and unwavering spirit paved the way for greater representation of Persons with Disabilities in sports. Asiya is also an educator and motivational speaker, impacting young minds and spreading a message of passion, power and perseverance. Her story exemplifies determination and the importance of creating opportunities for all. Today, we at Upili celebrate Asiya Mohammed for another well deserved milestone: being named one of the Magnificent 10 of 2024 in Kenya. Congratulations, Asiya! We look forward to watching and working with you in 2025. Next Step Foundation https://lnkd.in/dZyEVwJR

Today is International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Looking back on the leadership roles I have been able to take, they have been successful through people believing and giving me support needed to thrive. Most of us grew up to the saying, "You are the future leaders." we are ready for the leadership roles. We just need the right support to do wonders. Fresh young blood with Disabilities taking over the leadership positions backed up by the older generations with disabilities the future is bright for an inclusive and sustainable future. Happy International Day of Persons with Disabilities

On #WorldChildrensDay, we are reminded of the simple but powerful dreams children hold — peace, love, care, and safety. To make these dreams a reality, they need both nourishment for their bodies and support for their minds. Food For Education is stepping in to ensure they receive physical nourishment through school feeding programs, while the Next Step Foundation's Upili program offers a safe space for mental health support. Together, we #EmpoweringTheFuture by working together to create a better world for them. #ForEveryChild
