Throughout 2024, Alliance for Physical Therapy Quality and Innovation member companies have had the privilege of hosting federal lawmakers and staff at physical therapy clinics across the country as part of our 2024 Congressional Tour program. These visits have provided educational experiences for legislators to see firsthand the role physical and occupational therapists play in preserving the health, well-being, and independence of older Americans. From meeting with therapists and hearing stories of patients regaining mobility and managing chronic conditions, these tours have allowed us to demonstrate the essential care we provide to our patients and build relationships with lawmakers and their staffs. This year’s program has been a resounding success thanks to the dedication of our participating clinics and visiting lawmakers. We are deeply grateful for the chance to discuss the pressing issues facing our field—from ensuring sustainable Medicare reimbursement to advocating for policies that protect patients and access to care. We are proud to have hosted Representatives Kevin Hern, David Kustoff, Blake Moore, Jimmy Panetta, Darren Soto, Mike Kelly and Madeline Dean as well staff from the offices of Senators Marsha Blackburn Sherrod Brown, Mike Crapo, Steve Daines , Bill Hagerty, Joe Manchin, U.S. Senator Mark Warner and Representatives Don Beyer , Drew Ferguson, Gwen Moore, Raul Ruiz, Melanie Stansbury, Greg Steube, Lori Trahan and Dwight Evans. As we continue these important conversations, we urge lawmakers to support the Stopping Addiction and Falls for the Elderly (SAFE) Act (H.R. 7618) to ensure older Americans can access no-cost, preventative falls risk assessments by falls experts—physical and occupational therapists—as part of their annual Medicare wellness visit. The #SAFEAct continues to gain support in Congress. Thank you to our colleagues at Schmidt Public Affairs whose coordination and strategic expertise have been instrumental in making these tours so impactful. We look forward to continuing this work together as we head into fall meetings and beyond. Finally, a very special thank you to all our members who made this year’s tours possible, including: STAR Physical Therapy U.S. Physical Therapy, Inc. • Whoop Whoop! 👏 👏 👏 We are excited to partner with you, Allen Johnson! Here's to great success ahead!

🎉 We’re excited to announce another GRAND OPENING! 🎉 FYZICAL Daphne is now open in Daphne, Alabama! 🏅 Allen Johnson, President and Managing Partner, says he chose FYZICAL because “balance and health is personal [for him and his partner]. One of [their] family members has been a patient of FYZICAL for years dealing with balance, vestibular, and neurological issues and has experienced life-changing results. [They] knew [they] wanted to be able to contribute to the health of [their] community in the way FYZICAL did for [their] own family.” We’re proud to celebrate the opening of our newest FYZICAL location on the South Alabama coast! Allen is most excited about “getting to interact with and form long-lasting relationships with members of [the] community and to help those in need improve and LOVE THEIR LIFE now and for years to come.” The clinics “atmosphere, staff, technology and FYZICAL’s therapy treatments will be unlike any patients have experienced in the area.” Congrats Allen and Suzzane! Here's to a bright future of helping more people improve their balance, mobility, and overall well-being at FYZICAL Waltham! 💙 (Pictured L-R: Allen Johnson - President & Managing Partner, Dalila Armendariz - Client Care Specialist, Madison Johnson - FYZICIAN Liaison, Jay Megginson - Clinical Director/PT) #FYZICAL #physicaltherapy #GrandOpening #CommunityCare #DaphneAL #DaphneBuisness #DaphnePT #DaphneCommunity #DaphneCare #DaphnePhysicalTherapy

Power of the Network Effect a consideration for improving population health... The network effect is a powerful concept: the more people use a product or platform, the more valuable it becomes. Imagine something like the telephone, which is only useful if others have one. Social media platforms become more engaging the more friends, family, peers, and mentors you connect with. The value multiplies as the network grows. How could we use this concept to improve health? The company Kinsa uses the simplicity of tracking body temperature to gain complex insights into infections. With it, health organizations can track when outbreaks may occur and proactively plan. Now, I am not associated with Kinsa. I'm just fascinated by the power of the network effect and its ability to transform healthcare delivery. For me, that biomarker would be postural control and balance. With UprightVR, we can take advantage of this network effect because we can securely analyze large datasets once a sensory organization test (SOT) is completed. What could this mean for healthcare organizations and practicing clinicians? 💡 Predictive analytics on falls for individuals 💡 Population trends on falls for various demographics 💡 Perhaps even early detection of neurological issues 💡 Best practices for therapy could be identified If you are interested in learning more about this mission or being a part of it, feel free to message me directly or request general information at info@uprightvr.com P.S. If it wasn’t obvious already, the image was created with generative AI 😁

Could Balance Be Considered a Vital Sign? Balance isn’t just about staying steady—it’s fundamental to overall health and longevity. Did You Know? 👉 1 in 4 adults over 65 falls each year, leading to severe injuries and decreased quality of life. 👉 Falls are the leading cause of both fatal and non-fatal injuries among older adults. 👉 Every 11 seconds, an older adult in the U.S. falls. The inability to balance on one leg for 10 seconds is linked to a higher risk of mortality. 👉 As we age, our visual, vestibular, and somatosensory systems—crucial for balance—significantly change, increasing fall risk by 800% from young adulthood to age 90. Balance is a complex process that integrates multiple systems. Considering its profound impact on health, balance deserves recognition as a vital sign and a key measure of overall wellness. AND rehab providers are uniquely positioned to monitor and improve balance. Screening can be done early and often to provide a tremendous value-added service line to your clinic or practice.

  • Not only are we a fall management and prevention tool, but we also love engaging the community through education and fun VR modules. Thank you, Dylan DuBois and Sunrise Senior Living, for the opportunity to present.

Are You Using Sensory Organization Testing in Your Practice? As a provider, understanding your patients' intricate balance systems is crucial for effective rehabilitation. Sensory Organization Testing (SOT) evaluates how well individuals integrate sensory information to maintain balance and posture. Here’s why incorporating SOT into your practice can make a significant difference: Comprehensive Assessment: 💡 Multisensory Evaluation: Assess visual, vestibular, and proprioceptive systems to identify specific deficits. Personalized Rehabilitation Plans: 💡 Targeted Interventions: Develop customized therapy programs based on precise data. Enhanced Neuroplasticity: 💡 Functional Improvement: Facilitate better motor control and coordination through targeted sensory training. Versatile Applications: 💡 Orthopedic Rehabilitation: Aid patients recovering from lower extremity injury, surgeries, and other musculoskeletal issues. 💡 Neurological Recovery: Support individuals overcoming stroke, concussion, Parkinson’s, and other neurological conditions. 💡 Balance Enhancement: Help those with balance impairments regain stability and confidence.
