🌨️ ICY REFLECTIONS: A Journey into Glaciology with Annika Horlings 🌨️ At USAPECS, we’re excited to share Annika Horlings’ inspiring story about her path into glaciology, her passion for understanding the changing landscapes of our planet, and the lessons learned through fieldwork in some of the most remote regions on Earth. 👉 Read Annika’s full blog here: https://lnkd.in/gvCtEVv9 Annika, a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research at the University of Colorado Boulder, dives deep into what it means to work on glaciers in places like Antarctica and Alaska. From serene moments of solitude in the Alaskan Kenai Mountains to the grueling conditions of the Antarctic interior, her reflections connect the science of glaciers to the broader human experience of curiosity, perseverance, and awe for nature. ❄️ Why study glaciers? Glaciers are more than ice—they are records of Earth's history and sentinels of climate change. Annika's work on the Juneau Icefield aims to uncover how meltwater interacts with the glacier's surface and impacts regional ecosystems, sea levels, and our understanding of climate dynamics. 💡 A message to young scientists: Annika shares candid advice she wishes she could give her younger self: Embrace failure as part of growth. Seek joy outside of work. Value balance and interconnectedness, both in nature and in life. 📖 As Mary Oliver aptly put it: “What is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” We hope Annika’s reflections inspire you to explore, question, and contribute to our understanding of the natural world, whether through polar science or your own unique path. #PolarScience #Glaciology #Fieldwork #ClimateChange #ScienceStories #USAPECS

For five days, the Polar Film Festival will showcase short videos on topics related to the polar regions to the public and broader Polar research community. Films will be shared on our website each day during APECS International March Polar Week and we will host an online panel discussion with filmmakers about their works.Submissions of independently created films, typically 1-30 minutes in length, created by the submitter individually or as part of a group are welcomed. In the past, we’ve featured a range of works, such as academic documentaries, independently-produced videos, interviews, sneak peaks of upcoming full-length films, and news reports. We welcome a diversity of submission types and topics related to the Polar regions. September’s film festival can be viewed at: https://lnkd.in/gtAQqt_i for film submissions is: 7 February, 2025 If you would like to submit or suggest any short films or videos (typically 1-30 minutes long) for viewing, please submit them using this google form.We are also looking for people to host in-person screenings this fall, so if you’re interested in doing so, please indicate this on the film submission form.
