The Polar Impact Mentorship Initiative warmly invites the polar research community to join us as we explore what contributes to “successful” collaborations!" During this hour-long panel discussion, we will consider collaborations through multiple lenses and embrace the benefits that come from engaging with interdisciplinary research groups, policy and decision makers, and Indigenous and local community members. Whether you are building a career in polar research, have decades of polar experience, or want to learn more about how communities, scientists, and decision makers can better work together to solve complex problems, this panel discussion will offer insights and inspiration for all! The event will take place on February 28 from 10-11a EST | 3-4p GMT, and registration through this google form is required to receive the Zoom link. The Polar Impact Mentorship Initiative is one of many efforts led by Polar Impact, an international, inclusive network whose mission is to support, highlight, and connect racial and ethnic minorities in the polar sciences. The Consortium for the Advancement of Marine Arctic Science (CAMAS), established in 2023, aims to facilitate international collaboration and advance our understanding of key marine Arctic processes driving rapid environmental changes. CAMAS focuses on these critical themes: 1. Drivers and impacts of ocean heat and freshwater transport into and out of the Arctic 2. Ocean-ice-atmosphere interactions in a warming Arctic 3. Biophysical impacts of Arctic marine biogeochemistry The second CAMAS Workshop and Early-Career School will take place April 15–18, 2025, at the Center for Urban Horticulture in Seattle, Washington. For more details, visit our website.Early-Career Researchers: Apply for Travel Funding! We encourage non-local early-career scientists to apply for travel support to participate. Applications for travel funding are due February 7, 2025.Save the Date: Workshop registration will be available shortly.Feel free to share this announcement with your colleagues and networks. The team at the Juneau Icefield Research Program is excited to make two announcements: First, the deadline for student application submission has been extended to December 27, 2024. Applications will be received on a rolling basis after the submission date. Please visit https://lnkd.in/g6scZD5D for more details. Second, Faculty applications open for the 2025 Juneau Icefield Research Program! The Juneau Icefield Research Program (JIRP) is an 8-week summer field course for students interested in undergraduate-level Polar sciences. Participants receive a wide range of training in Earth & climate sciences, alpine travel and safety skills, and science communication while traversing the Juneau Icefield from Southeast Alaska to northern British Columbia.Teaching Faculty at JIRP are volunteers who are eager to share their passion and knowledge with students. We cover all expenses for our Teaching Faculty once they arrive in Juneau, including food, lodging, and helicopter flights. Faculty members are responsible for funding their own flights to Juneau.Typically, Teaching Faculty participate in a two-week block during the summer. Faculty should be prepared to lead hands-on field workshops or exercises, and mentor students on research activities, and teach several undergraduate-level lectures/workshops in core curriculum areas. We are actively seeking faculty who can contribute to our core curriculum in glaciology, glacial geology, climate science, and science communication, as well as in complementary fields like atmospheric science, alpine ecology, biogeochemistry, geomorphology, tectonics, polar engineering, science policy, and other related disciplines. While many of our faculty are professors, we also welcome advanced graduate students, professionals working in Polar sciences, artists & science communicators, and others to apply.Teaching faculty will accompany students on the Icefield, so should be prepared for 8-10 hours of challenging physical activity most days. Faculty will participate in required safety training covering basic mountaineering and crevasse-rescue skills to ensure they can safely navigate the Icefield with students.JIRP also supports a separate Research Faculty track for scientists looking to conduct externally-funded projects on the Juneau Icefield. JIRP can provide logistical support, opportunities to engage motivated students in research, and outreach possibilities. For additional information, please review the material available at https://lnkd.in/gcmafmN3. JIRP is also hosting a webinar for prospective faculty members on December 17th at 9am Alaska / 10am Pacific / 11am Mountain / Noon Central / 1pm Eastern (Zoom link here). Application information is available at https://lnkd.in/g22m4PVm, and applications are due by January 12, 2025 for priority consideration.
