About us
The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is the nation's record keeper. Of all documents and materials created in the course of business conducted by the United States Federal government, only 1%-3% are so important for legal or historical reasons that they are kept by us forever. Those valuable records are preserved and are available to you, whether you want to see if they contain clues about your family’s history, need to prove a veteran’s military service, or are researching an historical topic that interests you.

In commemoration of #BlackHistoryMonth, the National Archives reflects on Rosa Parks' courageous act on December 1, 1955, when she refused to surrender her seat on a segregated bus in Montgomery, Alabama. The National Archives holds several records about Rosa Parks, including a diagram of the bus she was on in December 1955, her fingerprint card, and her arrest report. In 1926, the Bureau of Indian Affairs implemented a standardized decimal filing system across its field offices to organize records by subject matter. This system replaced various inconsistent methods previously used, allowing for more efficient record-keeping and retrieval. The decimal filing system assigned numerical codes to specific topics. For example, playground equipment was categorized under code 510.223. This structured approach facilitated the systematic organization of documents, making it easier for researchers today to locate specific records within the National Archives' extensive collections. In the latest National Archives Catalog newsletter, Transcription Summaries have been introduced to enhance the transcription process. This feature provides an overview of how many pages within a record have been transcribed, allowing volunteers to quickly identify pages that still need attention. This improvement aims to streamline the workflow for Citizen Archivists. Citizen Archivists have been making significant contributions, particularly in transcribing Revolutionary War pension files. These efforts not only make historical records more accessible but also uncover personal stories of #RevWarVets. For those seeking assistance or looking to engage with the community, History Hub offers a platform to ask questions, share insights, and connect with fellow volunteers.
