Check out this cool project to restore this incredible piece of American history, located right in our state capital.
The Beaux Arts Trenton Battle Monument, commemorating the American victory in the first battle of Trenton is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. PS&S landscape architects, cultural resources staff and survey team recently supported R. A Sebring Architects in designing and gaining approvals for a state-funded program of plantings, lighting and accessibility improvements to help revitalize the aging monument. Among the obvious challenges facing the project is the need to comply with the Secretary of the Interior Standards for the Rehabilitation of Historic Properties and the New Jersey Register of Historic Places Act. The less obvious challenge lay below-ground, as the monument’s grounds cover a significant 18th century archaeological site – a pottery which represents an early phase in the city’s rich industrial history. Through a carefully collaborative interdisciplinary design effort that minimized potential impacts to the monument, the archaeological site and surrounding historic districts, our team was able to design around all of the issues. In December we won unconditional approval from the New Jersey Historic Preservation Office for this project. Stop by the monument in late 2025 to see our improvements in action! L.
